I've not had a crash due to using Sync yet - I've never used it.

I have used the Transfer to GPS button in the Synch section, successfully.
I've also used "Export to GPS", successfully.
I've only crashed due to maps, and cured that with a newer driver for the Graphics adapter.

For me anyway every time I have used "Synchronize" it has either crashed or taken a very, very long time to synchronize.
That happened with my Triton 2000, GC and now with the 710.

Like David I stopped using "Synchronize" a long time ago, so this morning I tried it with the 710 - VP crashed!

After playing with it for a while this morning I found that if I have loaded geocache files from GSAK on the 710 VP will not synchronize.
If the files on the 710 came from only VP it will synchronize, but slowly.
Maybe the picture files are the problem??

So, it works fine for me if I do not "Synchronize".

I have not had a problem with maps on VP, but I don't have many custom maps yet so my test samples are just a few.

Ok, lets see if we can get to the bottom of this issue, then we'll be able to tell Magellan what the problem is. That thing that is so agrevating to me is that I run VP on 4 different computer - 3 laptop and 1 desktop and besides the issues I'm been seeking with the customer maps, which are not Magellan's problem - VP runs fine on all of my machines...

So, any - here is what I need you to do. When VP is working correctly I need you to make a back up copy of the Vantage Point directory located under My Documents. Then the next time VP crashes we need to copy each directory back into the working directory one at a time until VP starts working again and see which directory the corrupted file is in. Once we do that, when we'll have to start working on each file in that directory. Eventually we should find out which file is the problem and then I can go back to Richard and with some hard info...

I do have one question. When you're loading stuff to your GPS do you ever use "Synchronize" or just "Transfer from PC to My GPS" and "Transfer from My GPS to PC"?

The reason I ask it because I realized the other day that I "NEVER" use Synchronize and haven't for the past 1 1/2 years. The reason for this is because the when I first got my Triton 1500 the Synchronize options would crash the T1500 100% of the time, however, the other to modes always worked fine so I leanred never to use the Synchronize option and haven't since... So, please let me know and if you are using the Synchronize option please stop using it and see if the problems go away.

Thanks,
David

I have no custom maps, every version of VP so far crashes every time I try and use it after about a week, to get it working again requires the manual deletion of every Magellan related file. Honestly I don't even know if I tried a complete wipe/reinstall after upgrading to 2.04... Maggy really needs to create a cleanup tool, I wouldn't even mind doing it every week if it wasn't such a manual process.

EDIT: Oh this on both my desktop and my laptop.

I was just thinking... Here's one for David to forward to Magellan.

Lets say for instance that xxx user had better luck with 2.00, but has trouble with 2.04. Why not have a section on Magellan's website where anyone can download a previous version of VP ? Lets say starting at 1.60, 1.73, etc. Just have a page where someone could get the archived versions, this might please others as well.

I've forwarded 1.73 to at least 5 people myself, because they've had problems with more recent versions with their Tritons. Face it, this would cost Magellan about zero dollars, and would let people get the version they want to use. Any others agree on this ?

It seems when I updated it wouldn't work but reinstalled it works.

It's been working fine for months now and I went years having VP crash every other time I used it.

I agree with Phil on this one. I had VP crashing regularly at one point (prior to the 2.xx versions) and after uninstalling it, I did a search for anything marked VP on it, deleted every file and folder that was related to VP or Magellan (except the driver folder). Then I downloaded and installed it from scratch, and haven't had trouble with it since.

Other than the Video card driver on the laptop, which is now fixed - using a driver I downloaded from the Video adapter's home page. I had tried a more recent driver from Dell, but it was worse .... I went to the adapter's site, and found a driver that was a full year more recent. Installed it, restart the computer, and it hasn't xxxx'd out since.

Well, I see that there has been quite a response to this/these issues and that I'm not the only one. Regarding needing to know the version of OS, etc....well....it's that exact same version I was using before I installed vantagepoint an still is to this day....windows 7 with all the latest updates etc. Like I said before, I CHANGE NOTHING. I have NOT installed any new software OR any other updates for any other programs from the point of working vantagepoint to a non-working state. It will be working fine one day...use it, use it, use it (and really enjoy it) then all the sudden poop out. That's the only change that I've had on my pc is from a working vantagpoint to a non-working version. The only thing that is fixing it is the complete removal and complete reinstall of vantagepoint. As for the one that really baffled me was I had the 2.0 version working fine and dandy for quite some time....got the notification that there was a new 2.04 version available upon launching 2.0 one day so I said yes go ahead and launch....after completing the update I attempted to run vantagepoint (supposed to be new 2.04) and upon first launch it crapped out immediately after the splash screen appeared. Said that "Vantagepoint has stopped working...windows is trying to find a bla bla bla"....didn't do anything from working to notworking so it's GOTTA be in the coding...perhaps some memory addressing routines should be fixed or something??? Like it's trying to grab & use data that is invalid for the program or something? Dunno, again I'm not a programmer but I have seen instances of other programs that were explained to me about how they address memory and that it wasn't clearing between each use...prolly not it but that's all I have. Seems like a good excuse anyway too when I have had it go completely rogue crapping out from a morning where I had it hooked to the GPSr and sync'ed the program & gps together....when done pulled the gps off the usb cord and go caching all day...then when I get home and try to do anything with it such as navigate the map or anything it crapped out on me that way as well....and nobody had touched it since I had left earlier in the day......weird!!!

I've made enough noise complaining & whining so I think I should acknowledge the hard work they have put into this.

Whatever Richard and the team at Magellan are doing, Version 2 & 2.04 are the only versions I've used that work without major problems for me.

Nice work on this guys, we all really appreciate it.

Well, every bug that is reported on this site as well as the Tritonforum and on the Geocaching forums (that I find) are reported directly to our friends at Magellan any they begin looking into them as soon as they receive them and the majority of them are reported straight through to their programmers. So, we need to be as detailed and thorough as possible when posting our problem here. Some examples are when we're reporting problems with VP - they need to know the computer configuration: processor, video card, operating system, other software loaded and peripherals installed and so on - and we need to make sure that we're running the newest drivers and updates so that we're not chasing ghost from the past! By doing this - we'll be playing a big part in helping ourselves get the best product possible...

I hope that Richard's priority will be correcting the issues with VP as a higher priority than adding a bunch of other stuff. I'm of the opinion of ... "fix what's broke first, before adding more broken stuff". This no attributes/no images thing is driving me batty .... lol !

Just to let you know; Richard, who is the Vantage Point guy at Magellan, is aware of these issues and they're working to correct them. I have more than a feeling that in the not so distant future we'll be seeing a new version of VP and I'm truly hoping that these issue disappear!!!

I have both a Magellan x710 and an eXplorist GC (for my daughters) and am very happy with both units. Also am pretty happy with the Vantagepoint software (very nice that it's free thank you Magellan!!!). Only thing is that I had version 2.0 for quite some time and things started to bug out on me where it would "Vantagepoint has stopped responding" and crashed out to the desktop. Dunno what was up because I hadn't done anything differently (or even had any improper shutdowns...I've messed with PC's for about 20+ years so I pretty well know what I'm doing I feel). So, I deleted it all off my PC (made sure the files in MyDocs were deleted as well) and reinstalled. Worked perfectly so perhaps something was corrupting a file within the VP software...perhaps the removal of the device without it emptying something fully during a transfer or something I don't know. Anyway, got a message that 2.04 was available as an update within the 2.0 version (Yes, it notified me...I see some people were saying that it wouldn't but perhaps they had "check for updates" unchecked). Anyway, I updated the software by following the link and it updated fine....or so I thought. After starting the updated 2.04 version it seemed ok but when I went to manually delete a cache it crashed!!! YUK! So not for sure that my previous "transfer didn't empty queue/cache" theory works now but sounds like it wasn't the reason. That's the only thing that changed on my pc from a working 2.0 version to a 2.04. So, I had to manually uninstall and delete everything from my pc and reinstall the 2.04 version again and now everything is fine. Evidentally the program is leaking something and not closing out a file correctly...I'm not a programmer but that sounds logical to me. For a free program I'm not gonna hack on it...it's pretty darn cool and I'll continue to use it but it would be a nice feature to add in sometime in the future to have it not crash on us LOL.

End of rant....thank you again Magellan for providing excellent handheld units and for also providing us with some cool software to boot!
