Loaded what I think was the most recent video adapter driver that I could find, along with a couple of other drivers it needed. No change. So I restarted the thing, turned off the Image maps (google earth-based), ran it for a good 15 minutes, and no shutdown. So I suspect it's the map that might be causing the problem for VP to shutdown the laptop.

UPDATE

I went to the Intel site, found another driver, a full year more recent, for this laptop's 965 Chipset family Video adapter. Installed it and PRESTO ! I ran VP with MOBAC Earth maps for a full hour, and NO SHUTDOWN ISSUES !

David's idea that the Video Graphics Adapter Driver might be the cause, and he was right. The shutdown I had this morning gave me a glimpse of the black screen with the error info, and I saw a glimpse of the Video Adapter ... error, and went with a new driver again.

For anyone else having this issue, try finding the MANUFACTURER's most recent driver for your video adapter, whoever makes it - use their driver, and not the one from Windows Update.

Thanks again David !

Denis,

That is cool, I'm glad to hear that something is working. Unfortunetly the Google Earth maps from Mobac or TrtionRMP are not supported by Magellan so I'm not sure what their response to those being the problem will be - however, there are some upgrades coming that will add those features in the not so distant future...

Another update - the green "hue" that I've been griping about - I found where it comes from. View - Shaded Relief - Map Color - unselected that, and now its perfect ! The day/night/off skins still work and give 3 different view choices, but at least that annoying green is gone !

Denis,

Back when I was an IT guy one of the most common causes of crashes in Windows had to do with Video Card Drivers. Are you running the newest Video Drivers for your Dell? Not the one that shipped with it, but find out the brand and model of the card and see if there is a newer drivers from Video Card manufacturer...

There's something to think about. And as I recall I've seen a similar problem viewing maps on another unit, maybe from the TritonForum... a video card driver fixed that problem as well...

I'll take a peek tonight...

Installed 2.04 on my Desktop computer the other day. Dell Dimension 3100 XP SP3. Works well on this one. Data transfers work well both ways - maps, tracks, routes, etc. No crashes.

A different problem - if I enable any Detail map I get this green image appear on the map - very annoying. It appears randomly, and usually when zooming in. It doesn't go away until I deactivate all the detail maps. Using MOBAC or MagicMaps I don't get this problem, only the Topo Canada detail maps. Still going to keep it on there, as 2.04 crashes my laptop, and I need one machine to work with the 610.

Well, I reloaded VP to experiment with route planning.
Everything worked, no problems except after transfer to GPS I had to unplug the GPS to finish the transfer.
I created a route in VP, transferred it to the 710.
When I brought up the route the 710 gave me driving directions for the route! :cheer:

I'm glad corbs2002 had a bunch of questions, I wouldn't have tried otherwise!

So I guess I don't hate VP anymore!

Happy that I could help 😉 I'm sure I'll also be doing a lot of experimentation when I receive my 710.

Back to good old 1.73. The paperless caching worked with the GC on this version, I was very happy to see. The other day we found 2 caches with it, and when I plugged in the GC and opened VP, it asked to publish the caches. So I went ahead and did so, what a nice feature. So I'm happy to have a version that works with the newer units. My 510 will be on order this week. Whoo whoooo !

.... which strangely enough was acting up on one of my machines, preventing me from being able to delete some files (pics, videos). I had uninstalled it, and got the GC just after ...

Something else to do - reinstall QuickTime....

LOL Laugh

I've got a couple versions stashed somewhere.
I'm waiting for the next version.

BTW, my XP laptop wouldn't work the GC or 710 in NMEA mode, in VP, until I installed Quick Time player on it.

Welcome to the club! 🙁

Just look for about half my posts over the past few months! :X

And for now that's all I'll say about VP. 😛

After using V 1.73 since forever, I upgraded the laptop to v 2.0 (XP Pro, sp3, Dell Vostro 1310) and now the thing shuts down while navigating a map with VP. Using the same MOBAC map I've been using for months, it shuts off the computer and restarts, comes up with an error regarding some unrelated Roxio software patch. I installed the patch, restarted the computer, and presto, it still shuts down !

I've since uninstalled any Roxio software which I a)never use, and b) is useless anyway. I doubt that it cures the problem, but it'll be one less useless program on here regarless.

Anyone else having units shutting down with VP 2.0 ?
