For a new geocacher start by looking for relatively easy caches to find, you will avoid getting frustrated and have fun right away.

Start with regular sized caches and look for a difficulty rating of 1.5 - 2 stars.
Read the description on the cache page.
Read the last few posts on the cache page, if several people have not found it (DNF) you might want to try for another one.
Decrypt the hint, if there is a hint, then you will have a better idea of what to look for.
Don't just blindly follow the arrow on your GPSr, trails may be on the map that will bring you close and when you are close start looking for a place it may be hidden.
Any GPSr has an accuracy of about 16 feet at best, that means the cache can be inside a 32 foot circle.

If you can't find it don't be embarrassed, post a 'did not find' log, that will let the cache owner know there might be a problem.
Plus when a new geocacher posts a DNF log for one my caches I will e-mail a note with specific help to find it, when a cache is rated 1.5 stars the owner wants people to find it without much trouble.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout
