Are those Torx screws for the cover?
Altough I got this unit new/sealed in June, I bought it off someone else and reading Magellan's warranty policy makes me think they're not going to honor the warranty ;-(
It is a six pointed screwdriver with the code CRV-TS but I do not know if this is a Torx.

Take off the back cover and run the unit and touch the cone and see if the distortion disappears or becomes very low. Is so, then it is cones.
Thanks for your help Mike - touching the cone makes the distortion disappear. Now what?
Thanks,
Barry(btw David, using Magellan adapter in the car)
Yes, as I suspected, the problem is not battery power. We have had encountered this situation before in our repair facilities.
If you are a gambler and have the tools you could take a peak under the hood!
Take the six screws out of the back panel and slowly lift up the back panel. Be careful, there are six static o-rings that stick to anything. DO NOT LOOSE THEM.
Do not disconnect the digital cable feed or the USB ribbon cable or detach the two wire connectors to the motherboard.
What you want to peek at is the speaker back. You should find an steel bar that goes across the speaker magnet which is held in by two small black screws.
What we are looking for is the possibility that in the Magellan Quality Control then did not install this part. Yes, this has happened.
If the steel bar is in place ... then you must return the unit to Magellan.
If the bar is there then you should return the unit to Magellan with this information. Else the speaker is broken. In this case, either live with the distortion or if under warranty have the unit replace.

My 710 suddenly started exhibiting severely distorted audio when giving turn directions. Has anybody else ever experienced this or have any advice?
It is not battery/voltage related - I hear the same distortion whether powered from car or internal batteries.
TIA
Barry, Let us take a simple approach. We have found that the cones on the speakers cannot take too much abuse. If they are overpowered they will get noisy, You have to distinguish whether the nose is distortion of the sound waves or cone distortion.
Take off the back cover and run the unit and touch the cone and see if the distortion disappears or becomes very low. Is so, then it is cones.
If the units still has the problem then it is electrically induced. I really doubt that the connection inside the unit has come loose it is really secured and latched.
Please give us a reply on further developments.

This may sound crazy, but it could still be the batteries! Did you replace the batteries with reflesh ones? And, 12v to USB adaptor you are using rated for 1500mA or more and is it a Magellan product? The reason that I ask this is if you are using an adaptor that isn't supplying enough amperage for the units when it is in speaks "turn-by-turn" navigation, it will make up the needed amperage from the batteries and if the batteries are low the turn-by-turn will be destorted and if they're to low, the turn-by-turn voice will not function.
With that said, I have heard of another unit that was heavily used heavily with the turn-by-turn mode with the volumen turned all the way it, that had a distortion problem and the unit was returned for replacement.
Hope this helps,
David
