I went last night, and indeed the Earth and Hybrid sources work again. There was some talk about them having been removed some months back, actually the day after I made the last map I needed for my area. I have all the maps I need for now, but it's good to know they're back.

You might wanna check to make sure you are indeed "starting" version 1.8. I have both versions installed and the icons for both are the same. I had to manually create an icon for the 1.8 since I already had 1.9 beta installed. I'm able to pull maps from almost all the sources except the one that I REALLY wanted with 1.8 (really was wanting the google terrain). If you're in the states then Google ones are really good for most anything I want. And after doing a couple with MOBAC I've overcome my fear of all those buttons. Really, all that's necessary with MOBAC is to move the map around and center where you want it....then right click n drag to select the area you want to make a map for. Then choose what zoom levels you're wanting (I just use 17,18, and 19...20 is just too fuzzy to see on the handheld and really 19 gives it away anyway, PLUS...many more selections and the thing gets HUGE. Most all of mine using those 3 zoom levels are around 500,000kb or less). Then give it a name then click add to selection then click on create atlas. That's it in a nutshell....VERY easy. Only secondary step you gotta do is drag the map over to the handheld unit MAP directory. Gotta do that with anything other than the newest vantagepoint (AWESOME BTW) updated version. I just like MOBAC since it's free. I just made a map last night of a nearby city last night so I know google hybrid is working. I like to just do city sat images since I like to get in and out quickly in an urban setting. Don't wanna stand around looking like a lurch too much LOL. Out in the wilderness the animals don't seem to mind lurching HA!

Quite a bit more work to learn & get them where you want em but free is free (for now that is)

There was a note a few months back about some map sources not being available any more - Google Earth and Google Hybrid were the ones I was using at the time. They showed up as "X"s in the grid boxes. Couldn't get the images to appear. And I was using 1.8 at the time.

Are they back up now ?

For myself anyway I don't want to learn how to create maps.
I just want to download maps to my 710.

Maps4me is nearly free and are great maps.
Digital Global on VP is dirt cheap and I don't need a third party program or two to use it to load very nice maps to my 710 that work perfectly the first time I tried it.

If Magellan puts in a better file system for Geocaches/waypoints VP can be a nearly perfect resource for using the explorist line of GPSr. :cheer:

As it is now, VP does everything better, especially the speed of transferring data to the GPSr.

Somebody should give the VP team a pat on the head!
Very good job on this update! :woohoo: :woohoo:

Phil, with your 29 bucks, can you build a map with D-G imagery ?

It's so easy a Geico gecko could do it!

Did you click the link - Vantage Point test - to see the maps I made?
I've got screenshots of my 710 and VP.

It's a one year subscription, you can download 1 GB a day for the year.
The maps are limited to 500 MB each.
That's over 720 maps you can download for $29.

Assuming you have a subscription, this is about what you have to do in VP:

- Click "Download Imagery"
You get the choice to log in (if you're not already). You have to do that, and in the dialog box also choose your registered GPS.

- You get a suggested selection frame for the area, based on where VP is
Adjust the frame to what you like.

- Click "Green Arrow" on the frame to download.
In the resulting dialog, give the map a name and select detail level.

- Check that the calculated download is no more than 500M (the limit for each map)

Click OK and the download and building of the map starts.

After that you get the choice of where to save the map (Hard Drive, GPS or SD card).

That's it.

It's easy.... I like it.

REALLY ?!? I'm guessing the subscription is mandatory then to do that. What's the procedure to build the map ? Very difficult ?

It builds a map...
I have tested this out and I got a nice (satellite) map of my surroundings... working really good on my 710.
I agree with Phil: This is good stuff !
And very easy to use.

I have been playing around with the Digital Global image maps on VP.
This is very nice! :cheer:
I've got a few screenshots and it's a pain to post more than 2 or 3, so go here - Vantage Point test to see what it looks like.

It's easy to do, on a program I already have (VP) and only costs $29 a year with unlimited downloads! 🙂 :cheer: :woohoo:

The Digital Global satellite imagery is real nice, it downloads a little bit slow but not bad at all.
The images look really nice on the 710, it impressed everyone who saw it at the geo-event I was at today.

I am now officially a VP booster! :woohoo:
I'll only complain about my lack of understanding of how to use it best now.

I've been playing with VP, it now loads PQs very fast and even better, it loads geocaches to the 710 as fast as anyone could want. :cheer:
It will load photos that are attached to a track, but I haven't figured out if I can have those attached photos show on the track with an icon or something.
Is there a way to get the attached photos to show on the track while it's displayed on the map?

This is what it gives me now, it's a list of photos attached to the track.
It displys the coordinates of each photo but doesn't show me on the track where it was taken.

Thank you for your help. The main reason I stopped using VP was because it was slow. It is faster now but seems to be a bit slow on loading images. My caches total 7,800 and the images for those caches are 1,150 (I'm on Verizon Fios for internet so speed really isn't an issue). Still happy with this release and will now be using VP only.

Remember that VP has to go to the Internet, and download each of those images from every cache page that has one, find the url for the image, and fetch it. There's no getting around the delay for the images, it's inevitable. However the caches and waypoints download in the blink of the eye, so there's a huge improvement there.

@ bkb, thanks for letting me know, I was going to try this today to see if it was fixed !

Just noticed this version now displays the pictures that are attached to a saved track.

Yeah, just click geocaches in my journal and delete them with the red X - top left of 'My Journal controls.
Right now I'm happy if VP just loads the PQs to my GPS in less than half an hour. I don't expect it to do anything else.
If you start with a blank page there's less chance of missing any data.
