Just to clarify...you do not need Vantage Point to load maps and data to the GC or X10 series units. They show up as an external storage device and you can put compatible files in their corresponding folders. Loading with this method is also much faster than using VP.

Yeah, you can load the maps to VP.
Then just transfer them to the 710 when you have it and you get a little used to using it.

It's a free program for your computer from Magellan.
Go here - Vantage Point and download it to your computer.

Again I'm sorry I voiced my opinion of VP.
I keep forgetting that it is free!
I agree with David, for a free utility it is very good, much better than anything else available for free.

I have a tendency to expect too much from VP and I forget that not everyone likes to or is able to collect mapping programs to experiment with.

A viable alternative to get pictures on the Explorist GC is to use 'Send to GPS' on GC.com.
You have to do one cache at a time but not all caches have pictures attached or need the pictures to find the cache.
You could advise your friends with an ExGC to use this option for a few caches they want or need the pictures for if they find VP to be a problem.

Some examples of caches loaded to my GC this way;

The first one is a cache that kept getting muggled, so I put in a combination lock container.

Please understand that I'm not removing any responsiblity from Magellan for making it work - because, like you said it does come with the unit and it should do what it is advertised to do. To that I totally agree. However, and I'm not imply that you said this, but VP is a utility that comes with the GPS and doesn't claim to be a high end mapping program and it should be held to that standard. In actuality I've been doing this for a while and I'm suprised that VP does all that it does considering it is a free utility and as I said, I'm looking forward to the added functionality that Magellan is adding to it...

And please understand that I'm just as frustrated about the issues that people like yourself are having with it, because I want to see it work. It frustrates me because as a tester I have it installed on 5 different computer with 3 different operating systems and 5 different hardware configuration and it works perfectly on all 5! I actually wish it would mess up on at least one of them so I could at least try to figure out the problem!!!

However, I do know that Richard and the software crew at Magellan are working on the issue and we're all hoping to see these problems turn into a thing of the past.

Because Streets & Trips isn't free software, 2 of my friends I bought GC units for as presents because they couldn't even afford a new GPSr and still had serial based Garmin Etrex units. I'm not gonna tell them to go buy more software to use the gift. VP may be free but it is part of the experience Maggy is selling when people buy their GPS units, for example they advertise you can see pictures in the descriptions on the new units, but the drag and drop method won't do it. And fair or not they are going to be judged on it.

At least both of their installs of Vantage Point haven't had the issues I'm having, even after the update mine crashes if I try and do anything on both of my PCs. Gonna try my reset procedure one more time and hope it works.

Your post got the rest of us alerted to a problem and Maggie has been very quick to address issues that this forum has encountered.
I'm still more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

So which is it? They knew about it a few days, or my post alerted them? Don't get me wrong, I have been a long time fan of Maggy products, and stuck with them even through the down times, and my new x10 makes me glad I did because it is a great GPS. But with the string of VP problems, and the fact I had to return the new vehicle GPS I bought because the routing was horrendous (if you tried to take an alternate route), you will have to excuse me if my faith is starting to waiver.

P.S. I posted this to the GC.com GPS forums last night, but to date (24 hours) there have been 0 views of the post. Someone may want to give it a little bump to keep it on the first page.

Ok, here is what I know - by the time I spoke to Richard at Magellan they were aware of the issue, however, I didn't think to ask him exactly how long they had known about it - but does it really matter exactly when they found out about it..

And yes I concede, VP isn't perfect - however, I personally know that a lot of time and effort is being put into this program to make is a usable product but then again, let’s remember what VP is! VP is not advertised as a HIGH END mapping program, rather, it is a free utility that comes with the GPS that is to help in accomplishing some of the functions more easily such as loading Waypoint and Geocaches and managing maps. Now with the Triton our hands were tied, because we had to use it. However, with the eX-Series they've given us open USB transfer so we can use GSAK or just drag and drop or any other product that someone wants to write. Yes, I know VP isn't perfect and it doesn't run on all systems, but I've also used Garmin's equal and was less impressed with it than I am VP.

Now I'm sure that there are several other products on the market that do a better job than VP - however, they also cost $$$, where anyone can go to Magellangps.com and freely download VP.

I've purchased a lot of products - i.e., MP3 players, Voice Recorders and even other GPSrs that came with similar products that were never used because they were just garbage, but I also knew that they were exactly that – FREE programs and I had bought the device, so I wasn’t going to trash the product over the free software – unless it kept me from using the product then that was an animal of a different color!

However, going back to the point – Magellan is investing a lot of time, effort and resources in improving and developing new features for VP and I’m looking forward to seeing them – so I commend them for it!
To be honest, they could just drop VP and write the instructions telling us to drag and drop to the unit and the product would still be a superior GPS!

Just My Opinion.... 😛
David

How about showing them how to use GSAK to export the caches to Microsoft's Street & Trips?

That's a much better road map that actually works.

Actually I am glad to say VP isn't important to me personally because I started using GSAK, but I do like being able to look at the map of all the caches as GSAK has no mapping features.

BUT... to my non technical friends VP is a much more user friendly program then GSAK, not everyone is a techy, especially the new cachers who are buying the GC units. To them VP is part of the experience of Magellan, finding the caches is the fun, not figuring out how to load your GPSr. If you frustrate them they will choose a different GPSr next time, and tell their friends that Maggy is too hard to use. So unless you feel there are enough of us techies out there to keep Maggy afloat buying new units we will soon find them out of business.

How about this, they knew about it in a few days because of your post? 😛

Vantage Point is a program I gave up on a long time ago. I keep trying the new versions hoping it will improve but I never use it.
The x10 units work just fine without VP so I don't worry about any issues with VP except as an exercise in trouble shooting & frustration.

If VP is really important to you then you are in for some real headaches.
I keep hoping they will just throw it away and start over with a new mapping program.

If version 2.04 does have an update problem I'm quite sure they will fix it with the next update now that they know about it.
I guess we will have to keep checking for the next update to be sure.
But so far Maggie has been pretty good about fixing problems, like the registration snafu caused by their web page design contractors.

To install VP version 2.04;

Go here - Maggie and download VP.

Run the exe. to uninstall VP, then run it again to install version 2.04

Version 2 will not update or tell you about new updates.

It is available now.
It won't update itself, that's one of the bugs in version 2.
Just download VP from Magellan, what you will download is version 2.04.
Then install version 2.04.

Version 2 will never tell you a new version is available.
