Graham, I am not 100% sure that my GPSr behaves in exactly the same way as you have described. I have definitely been directed to do a weird convoluted turn once or twice and thought - "what the #$%^" and put it down to the GPSr deciding to re-route for some reason, but it is not all the time.
I will check it out tomorrow and keep a close watch on what it does.
I have 6.53 FW after upgrading from 6.33

A couple of other interesting issues though:
1. I have noticed from time to time that the little turn arrow on the top LHS of the screen will indicate (say) turn left, but the voice will say turn right. I have ignored that thinking I misheard the voice command - it is a bit soft sometmes! Maybe this is linked with what you are describing?
2. Although in an earlier post I mentioned that the 2 chimes that go off just before a turn are a wonderful assistance, I have noticed that when you enter a round-about and you have to turn left or right, that the chime gives you the "go straight ahead" sound of low-low.

Or do you think it's just your unit?

This is just a wild hare thought but I figured, what the heck, it probably won't hurt anything.
I was thinking if firmware 6.33 caused the problem, try installing 6.06 and then reinstall the latest - 6.53.
Maybe skipping 6.33 will confuse the gremlin that is messing with your unit. :silly:
Of course my knowledge of programming is miniscule so doing this may not change any corrupted files.

You can get the firmware versions from Jungle Ghost.

Hi Phil,

There are not many 710 in Australia because initially only up to the 610 was released and the 710 were not available for well over a year may have been two years therefore most users have 610s. I’m hoping Peter will respond as he is in the east and there would be more there. I know he has a friend with one (the one he tried to destroy with his doggy file).

I have thought about loading an old version but I’m a little nervous about making things worse. I can manage it but it is very annoying as sometime if I don’t look far enough ahead I end up take the long road instead of the short road!!!!

Graham.

Have you loaded version 6.53. You should.

Thanks Phil,

I like the Port and Starboard analogy, takes me back to my sailing days.

Prior to firmware update 6.33 my 710 would do as you described that is occasionally get it wrong. But since then at every intersection (as best I can tell) controlled by traffic lights it will not direct me to make a legal right turn (across the oncoming traffic) when driving on the portside of the road. It would appear that something changed or got corrupted when I loaded firmware 6.33.

There must be a ‘bit’ in a file that controls this but I’ve been unable to find it and all attempts to fix it including reloading the firmware have been unsuccessful. I’m trying to avoid sending my 710 to Magellan Australia; I don’t wish to repeat Peter’s experience.

Graham.

To avoid the correct/incorrect, left/right connotations of driving I'll start with this;
I drive in the USA where we drive on the starboard side of the road.
I have never driven in a country that drives on the port side of the road.

So, on to the occasionally confused/confusing directions from my 710.
What seems to happen with my 710 here in "Starboard Side Land" is sometimes I'll get directions that are illegal or have me make u-turns when not needed.
I have no idea why, but I have seen this since day one and with all updates.
But it is not a common occurrence.

What I do is just think of it as Maggie sometimes behaving like an old girlfriend of mine who always gave me the wrong directions to anywhere. :silly:

So when Maggie tells me to turn right and then make a legal u-turn to go through an intersection that I could have turned left at I just ignore the obvious mistaken directions and turn left.

If this behavior is normal in "Port Side Land" (OZ, UK etc) then it would seem to be a programming fault.
Like I stated it's an occasional occurrence at most with my 710 in the USA.

Not much help I guess but it's all I've got.

The Turn-by-Turn routing on my 710 is not indicating a legal right/left turn at intersections controlled by traffic lights. I have been reluctant to mention this on the forum because so many of you drive on the incorrect side of the road. To get around this I will use the convention of writing ‘right/left’ or ‘left/right’ where the first mention word is for countries where drivers drive on the left (like Australia) and the second word for counties where drivers drive on the right (like USA). Hopefully it will not get to confusion.

The problem occurs at more major or dual carriage ways intersections controlled by traffic lights. As I approach the intersection where it is legal to turn right/left (across the oncoming traffic) the Turn-by-Turn routing will indicate to do one of two things. Either do a left/right turn followed by a U-Turn then come back and proceed straight across the intersection or proceed through the intersection followed by a U-Turn then come back to the intersection and turn left/right.

My 710 worked correctly prior to the second last firmware update. I have tried different setting, reloaded the firmware all to no avail. I believe there must be a file that controls this but I’ve not been able to identify it. At minor intersection not controlled by traffic light it will indicate to turn right/left.

Has anyone else experienced this or any suggestions on what I might try?

Thanks,
Graham.
