Yeah, the 'Caches along a route' function on geocaching.com is the best way to create a Pocket Query in an extended area.
Whenever I'm going on a trip I make Pocket Queries of the roads I'm traveling on.
But a pocket query doesn't give you the best cache to cache route to use.

The route function of the GPSr has nothing to do with roads or pocket queries, you create the route one cache at a time in the order you want to look for them.
I figure out on the map the best way to go after them, then make a route in the order that works the best.
I don't have to figure which one to go to next while out in the field.
Sometimes the closest is not the best, depending on the trails and terrain.

When there are many caches in an area I can still have all of them on the 710 but I will pick which caches I have time for or interest in and have just them on a route on the 710.
I'll have several different routes on the GPSr ready for me to use when and if I want them.

While I'm on the trails I don't have a computer to see the roads or trails so a route I've already created on the 710 can be a real time saver.

The turn by turn directions of course is not used when you're not on a road, but the geocaching/hiking mode is, so a route on the GPSr has the best route to as many caches as you want in the order that you want to go after them.
No more trying to remember which cache should I go for next after finding one.

I create routes in Google Earth, drop it into Geocaching.com and then create a pocket query of the route out to 6 miles each side. I have done this for a couple years now. We cache in the mountains where there aren't a lot of roads, so some of the caches are on trails. Creating it in GE you don't have to follow roads, you can make a route anywhere. I show the caches on GE then make the route to connect them. When the pocket query is dumped into VP we can see where the roads are so don't need turn by turn directions.

By the way, when you create a route on VP you can get driving directions on VP but those directions will not be transferred to the GPSr.

The GPSr will calculate it's own driving directions.
VP & the 710 must be using the same program because my 710 came up with the same directions as VP did for two routes I created.
It only differed when I started at a different spot or left the calculated route, then the 710 recalculated the route.

I only tested driving, not bicycle or pedestrian mode.
The 710 will ignore one way streets and put you on walkways, when available, while in bicycle or pedestrian mode.

I was just playing around with creating routes.
You can add geocaches from the map to a route.
When you add a cache from the map it will be on the route as a waypoint, when you add it from the cache list it shows as a geocache.

I also created a route on VP using caches as the points and transferred the route to my 710.
The caches show as waypoints, not caches on the unit but the routes all worked fine on the 710.
I got driving directions and could switch to geocaching/hiking mode and back to driving.
When I found a cache I went to 'Goto next' on route options and it gave me directions to the next cache on the route.

I know that the last time I tried this VP would not transfer a route to my 710 but the was before the last two updates.

I'll get some screenshots in a little while.

Hmm...just curious S!G, did you happen to be able to drop into the dashboard while you were 'on route'? I didn't seem to be able to zone in on the caches while on a route at all but then again, it might just have been me as it was my first time at the attempt. Doing a walking route would be useful in an urban setting, I just would like to be able to do that in a very rural setting as well. There has to be a way to do this that is easy I'm sure. I'm gonna give it another shot this weekend I think and see what happens. I'd "like" to be able to do turn-by-turn to get to the general vicinity then be able to go to dashboard mode (or at least geocaching mode) and find the cache, mark it as found (and remove it as a destination point), then jump back into turn-by-turn and resume the route without freaking out and it wanting me to continue to the one I just did and having to delete it. Whew! I'm wore out just thinking about it again!

It was awfully nice being able to make a route right on the unit itself I gotta say. Handy when you're out and about not near a pc to create the route there. I think I remember tho not being able to visually selecting a cache for a route on the pan screen tho..that would have been nice. Instead, I had to select either from a list of nearest caches or sort then select the far and away caches I wanted to visit.

I did this. Made a route with several caches and several waypoints on corners. I was walking the route all in Geocache Profile. It worked great for me. I've had no issues.

I've never had any luck creating a route to several caches, I had the same experience with getting back on the route.
So when I'm going after a specific group of caches I have those cache id numbers, in the order I want to get them, in a note on my phone.
Then I search for each one separately.
They are usually fairly close to each other so they show up on the cache list anyway.

Never done it with the x10, but I've used VP to create the route, from cache to cache, in the order desired, then upload it to the unit. Start your route, then off you go. Might not have the turn-by-turn, or maybe so, you might have the option to use t-b-t from one point to the other.

Try it out, and let us know !

Just wondering if anyone has created a geocache route on their x710 unit and ran the route looking for caches? I created one yesterday by going thru the route create menu and selected 14 different caches I wanted to hit and started the route in vehicle profile to give me turn by turn directions. Upon arriving at the 1st cache the unit was none too friendly in helping to find the cache and had to drop it into geocache mode. Then the fun really began...had to delete that cache from the route then jump back into vehicle mode then re-start the route....whew...seems like there should be an easier way....

Anyone done this and would like to share their experiences? I'd love to hear em...
