Yeah, buy the map from Magellan and the 610 will give you driving directions.

Has anyone perfected a nice package to make this work?

Nobody wants to take away anything from Magellan. If I had the choice to uses IGO + ex610 or the ex610 with Europe Routing, I would take the integrated package. 100$ that's the price for either or the other. And secondly Magellan has to pay license fees for the map data, which is mainly forwarded to the users.

But that is not the point.

The times change. The time is over for Navtec and TeleAtlas to be the only ones with map data. Google is agressivly going in the market and will provide maps for free (exept you will be spammed with ads ... eg. "have a look to the right...What about a delicious Starbucks Coffee?") Google will ruin the market, except for built-in devices, where they may survive longer.

In parallel to that the OpenStreetMap is growing. Free map data in a very high quality, better, up to date and many more details than any commercial company will be able to provide. This data is usable for Garmin devices and Garmin sells it outdoor Units mainly because of the availability of these free maps. Other companys who want to survive plan on open system and Openstreetmap data.

What about hiking routing? Mountainbike routing? Marine routing? Alpine Climbing routing according to your skills? Such things and more are possible with this data. No Google, Navtec or Teleatlas will be able to provide this.

Now how about Magellan concentrate on their core business and develop high quality GPS devices with a leading Software capable of reading such data? (or allow the public to produce such maps) They would kick out any competitor!

This was what Caotix ment, when saying "...Magellan missed to..."

Unfortunately it seems that Magellan keeps the free routing maps away from the new eXplorist's, to bad.

Unfortunate? They are in the business of selling things like the 710, that does street routing!
If they started giving it away I would demand my money back for the 710!
And of course they would never sell another 710.

After running my 710, an Oregon and a DeLorme PN60 side by side in my truck I can state categorically that the 710 is better. The screen is better, the controls are better, the maps are easier to see, the speaker can be heard, it doesn't try to send me down one way streets the wrong way, it recalculates the route in a few seconds, it always has the street names correct and I can set it for automobile, bicycle or pedestrian and it adjusts the route accordingly.

So, if you are some kind of computer whiz (I'm not) that makes their own maps and programs you don't need something like the 710.
But do you really expect Magellan to just give away their stuff?

is there a street navigation possibility with the 610?

Sure, EX610 support street routing, but you have to load turn-by-turn map.

All new units support four type of Detail Maps:
- City Series - standard turn-by-turn maps
- Summit Series - topographic maps
- Summit + City Series - routable topographic maps
- Detail Maps - maps for older units ( eXplorist, Tritons ) and probably third-party maps created with some other software like MMO...

One example of Summit + City Series maps is our future routable topographic map of Afghanistan - RtopoAF

Unfortunately attachment are limited to 150kb and 400px so I cannot upload proper screenshots here ...

OH,

Any word on when the rest of the world will be covered by Maggie's 710?

Yes it sure does. But only with the US map provided. Our target is to use homebrew, license free maps based on Openstreetmap data for routing.

As of now it is only possible with the new Magellan SDK to create such maps, which licensing costs and required side contracts are nuts.

Yes I know, but my friends have Oregons or Dakotas and they are using regular OSM Maps. The only thing they have to do is to switch to "routing by street" mode. To bad that Maggy missed this.

Hi,
using the integrated routing software with custom maps? I did not find out how to prepare maps to be recognized by the X10...yet 🙂

3rd party software based on OSM data for Win Mobile works fine. With the new MOD V1.0 you can run about every Win Mobile application on the x10.

Hello Sockeye,
is there a street navifation possibility with the 610?
Have you tried if it0 can use OSM-Maps for routing like Gremlins Oregons do?

😉 Yepp, with some modifications to the Triton MOD, you can access the Win CE of the eXplorists.

Of course the pain starts all over again, to find out to how to include the power/ light / usb functions etc. But for now I managed to get iGO up & running from booting from SD card.

Still a lot of work to be done...
