Here is a short "how-to" exchange the basemaps:
1. Connect your eXplorist to your PC via USB connection
2. Now you should have access to the eX file system. Your basemap is located in the folder MAP
Location of the original basemap:
3. Move your original basemap (WWNA_BM.mgi) to your PC. (also a copy on CD-R is always advisable)
4. Copy the alternative basemap (e.g. BMEU.MGI) to the MAP folder
Optional: (I found no difference in performance doing it or not)
5. Edit the file MAPtouch.mdc with e.g. Notepad
Original content:
6. Insert the name of the new basemap and save it
Done. Reboot your eX and you have a good looking, performant basemap and plenty of space for additional maps.

Hi all,
I developped "lean" basemaps for the eXplorists (510, 610 710), but especially for the eXplorist 310, as it only has 2 GB storage and 1.2 GB are eaten up by the preinstalled basemap.
The new basemaps (available on regional basis to reduce size, e.g. roads and rivers are only included in the specific region) only use ~250 MB of the precious storage space. Replacing your original one with these will give you the possibility to use large detail maps and large RMP maps.
These basemaps are available here: Maps4me.net
IMPORTANT:
Please backup your original basemap prior to replacing it with the small ones. The original basemaps are coded exlusivly to your device and Magellan will not replace them!
