Sockeye's map is much better.
Sorry Sockeye, I didn't know about your Iceland map when I posted that. :blush:

Ahhh. I think I was confused by the "City Series - North America" vs "Summit + City Series". You explained it well, thanks!

On Vantage Point you should see this;

I don't have the North America map on VP yet. Just the USA.

Welcome to the forum FrndlyFire.

On the 710 to access the map files;

Click Maps.

That will bring up this;

Click detail maps to get this;

You'll see that I have Summit + City Series USA checked.
The City Series North America map I bought to cover Canada.

I was actually a little confused when I uploaded VP with my 710 maps. There were only two maps recognized on the unit, and I didn't see anything resembling "City Series Maps". The unit does "turn by turn" so I'm guessing it's there. I guess I'll have to go back and look harder at the map files.

Here's the link;

http://www.magellangps.com/VantagePoint

If you use the 'add a link?' thingy it won't show.
Just copy the address to the post.
I forget that it won't work about half the time I try to put a link on my posts. :blush:

Personally I don't care at all about which words Sockeye has used on his site.

Sockeye: You are my HERO !!!!
Thank you for great maps !

In my opinion $14 for all this is "maps for free".

Keep up the good work, Sockeye. It's much appreciated.

Many thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I went to the Magellan website and could not find the actual download for vantage point; only the user manual. I suppose the software will come with my unit when I receive it.

I will try these suggestions when my unit arrives later this week and report on my progress in case it is useful to anyone..

Thanks again,

George Pappas

Hi,

I actually changed the sub-title, as I really do not want to raise false expectations.

I actually found the site long ago by searching for "Free Magellan Maps" currently it is #4 in Google but I believe it was #1 or #2 when I found it.

Also I noticed the site now says license free maps... but I do not believe it has always been worded that way. This is a much more honest description of what they are, as it would now mean free as in the open source definition, free as in "free speech", not as in "free beer" much like the Linux OS.

Sockeye understand I believe you have all right to charge so please don't think my argument was I wanted it without paying. Seeing it is now listed as License Free Maps, I believe a more honest description, you can probably expect some money your way as soon as I have a few extra to spare.

This site has always made me laugh, "Free Maps, only $14 a year!"

Don't get me wrong, he deserves to get paid for the work he puts into them, and they are awesome maps and are an amazing deal at only $14 for a year of unlimited access. But the only reason I have not joined the site is because I hate false advertising and websites that use the word free so that they get linked by Google when people search for free something.

P.S. I heard Magellan is now giving away Explorist 710s for free, you only need to pay a one time registration fee of $550.

Where did you see any false advertising?
They are posted as license free and the website is maps4me not maps4free.

P.S. I heard Magellan is selling maps that work on the 710, they only cost hundreds of dollars, don't cover much outside of the USA and will only work on your registered unit.
A much better deal than $14. 😛

BTW I just Googled 'free maps online' and maps4me did not come up on the list, but I only checked 16 pages. 😉

Hi KI4HLW,

My Maps4me.net site does have many free maps.
By the way, the Iceland map linked above is one of them.

It is probably a wrong wording Sockeye used.
But, all smaller maps up to a size of 20MB are free to download without registration. Larger maps are only available to registered users. Sockeye does those maps as a hobby and had to invest into new hardware and webspace. That's wy I do not have a problem to pay those 14$ a year. The maps are great and the job Sockeye does is awesome.
