"Prince Edward Island seems to be a screwy patchwork of images."

Yeah - I was there (VP) again just now, and nothing's changed.
On top of most of the island's having been done in winter, one would think that of the hundreds of times that satellites pass over any given land mass, they could find at least ONE summertime dataset WITHOUT clouds!!!

Mobile Atlas Creator ain't much better, either. The only satellite pix still available with it are Google's, and they, too, are very much incomplete.

I DID, however, discover some neat things about MOBAC. Fer instance, if one sets the grid zoom to, for example, 13 and selects a map zoom level of 17, a 3 X 3 grid of squares will give one 4608 tiles, just 335 tiles less than the maximum 18,000 X 18,000 map size. Also, there are no overlaps or missed areas to deal with.

Ok guys, I've forwarded your comments onto Richard and we'll see what he has to say...

Prince Edward Island seems to be a screwy patchwork of images.
Zoomed out it's clear and summer.
Zoom in and there is only one strip, near the center of the island, that is not winter.

I haven't run into that on any of the maps I've done for New England yet.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

"So, Scroogie can you please give me some coordinates as to where you're seeing the cloudy images."

Sure thing, David.

I'm at (more or less) 49" 50'N - 119" 37'W, and it's NOT cloudy here. 😉

Many thanks for going to all this trouble. I just hope it bears fruit.

They contend that winter pix, as well, are rare. Strange - the only other place I wanted to map was Prince Edward Island and, wouldn't you know it - winter pix.

Ok, we just got a reply back from Digital Globe:

Hi Richard,

Can you or the forum team ask Keith to provide his rough location in a private email to check that area? I want to make sure something is right on the cloud service profile as cloudy and winter imagery should be rare.

So, Scroogie can you please give me some coordinates as to where you're seeing the cloudy images.

Thanks
David

Ok, I just got off of the phone with Richard, the GIS guy at Magellan who is responsible for VP, and he told me that they are aware of these issues with DG and he has contacted them requesting an answer to our question concerning the frequency of updates on the maps and as to why these maps, with reduces quality, are being posted to the server. He's hoping to have an answer for us in the next couple of days.

:silly:  NOT making fun of Scroogie but you gotta admit...that is kinda funny getting to see both sides of the clouds thing. I'm just glad it's not me!

On a lighter note....you "could" jump ship as Morel, myself, and several other people have and do the make your own map for free thing with Mobile Atlas creator... Can choose from a LOT of different sources as well as create custom TOPO, Terrain, as well as the usual satellite images that you're looking for....it's really not that hard. Just look in the forums for the tutorial that's posted to get you started.

I believe the owners of the source maps (Google, etc.) will update certain areas of higher demand first, and then update whatever areas the satellite passes over, be it populated areas or whatever. Recently we had a large section of our area updated with more recent low-res images, not hi res but almost as good. Very good for low-resolution. These images are about 4-5 years old, compared to 15 years old, so it is an improvement.

I suspect if you put in a request to Google Earth somehow, they would add it to the list, and if enough requests come in, they'd do it sooner. Likely similar for other sources.

Hi,

I have the same question about some regions of the French Alps which are at a very low definition (actually, it is the same in Google Earth). Does anyone know whether updates with better definition are scheduled?
Thanks
Emmanuel

I ask this because the DG map of my area available on VP right now was taken on a cloudy day (and in the winter, as well).

So, right now, I've paid $30 for aerial views of clouds, but I CAN say that they look the same from this side as they do from that side. :side:

Keith

I will forward your question to Richard at Magellan to find out.
