I just took a risk on a ebay/broken GC and it turned out great, because of this forum. So I wanted to contribute my success so that somebody else may benefit…but first I must say that I am not a programmer of any kind and simply did a little trial and error to get my almost new GC working.

I followed the instructions, from the forum, but had to adjust a little bit and found out another secret to getting a boot frozen device to work.

1. Batteries out and then plug GC to USB to PC
2. Three finger restart (up arrow, menu, start) but I added pushing the reset button as it was restarting (had my 8-year-old son use a paperclip)…this got the unit into Dev. Mode.
3. I started trying the update to 1.7 but after completion it still would not go past “Organizing Database.” I could tell this is where it had been for long time before because of a little screen burn-in, because of somebody else’s repeated attempts to unfreeze the uni.
4. So I started removing software from the GC, thru My Computer running XP Pro, and transferring it ALL to a folder on my harddrive.

I left the following folders (because I didn’t have the forum downloadable files yet) and software to get it operational…otherwise the update would not complete.

Required:
SYS/USBTRANS/Unit_ID.dat - file
App/MapData/map.dat - file
App/MapData/MapDisplayConfig – configuration settings file
App/Compass - application file
App/CompassShell – application file
App/CompassDriver.dll – file
App/ConnectedToPC – application file
App/Database – file
App/FactorySettings - configuration settings file
App/MapDatabase - configuration settings file
App/msvcr80.dll – file
App/QtCore4/dll – file
App/QtGui4.dll – file
App/systemsettings – configuration settings file

ALL other files and folders were NOT needed to get the update to work.

A couple files are probably not needed, and if they are corrupted then you are probably not going to get it completed. But the map file and the systemsettings are critical to getting the update to complete and put all of the missing files back onto the unit, and some of the others my computer wanted so that it could find the unit to load the update.

Anyway, I wanted to thank everybody for their input on this forum because without them, this unit would be a brick.

:woohoo:

Finally got it to go into Developer Mode. Just kept pressing the reset button over and over while holding menu-up-power.

Added the track file back just in case that had something to do with this and deleted all .jpg files. Rebooted and it came back up with no problem.

Thanks to everybody for your help and suggestions.

Hopefully, if this is an issue with the recent v1.7, Magellan will have a fix for it soon...

This is a long shot, but reset the unit with the reset but and as soon as it begins to start pull the battery out - when try the up+menu+power button again. I've never really had a problem with in not going into the developers mode before; however, with this last problem I did and I had to try it several times before I got it to work and I did get it to work on both a Win7 machine at home and a Win XP machine while on vacation.

Press and hold the menu + up buttons before depressing the power button.

No joy. I took the batteries out, plugged the unit into two computers (Win7 and WinXP). Held power+up+menu for 2 minutes, still hanging at Loading Tracks.

Ok, my GC has locked up several times in the past two days and I've had to wipe the data off of a number of times now, but here is what I found.

If the unit is not connected to the PC via USB when it is powered up then it will not go into the Developers Mode. This must be something to do with the latest firmware, because I've never had this issue before. What has worked every time now is to take the batteries out of the unit, connect it to the PC and then turn it on holding the up+menu+power and do not let ok of any of them unit it goes into the dev. mode.

Yes.

It will not power up while the reset button is pushed. I push it, hold the power button and menu button, and push the joystick up, and it does not power on.

I do that then release the reset button, it starts to boot, but hangs on "Loading Tracks".

I push just the power button, menu button, and hold the joystick up, then press the reset button, and it just reboots, then hangs on "Loading Tracks"

When it hangs, if I press the power button, the radar stops spinning, but nothing else. It will not shut down until I pull the USB cable and batteries.

Just to be sure, are you pressing the reset while holding the joystick up, menu button and power button all at once?

This is from another thread;

You can try the special 3 finger restart.

1. Fresh batteries
2. From the turned off state
3. Connect USB
4. Hold joystick up, menu and power button all together
5. Insert paper clip into the reset hole next to the USB plug and click it

This will restart it in disk access mode. From here I would think you could rerun the upgrade (either from VP or just download the file from magellan).

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

So, like an idiot, I wiped all caches, waypoints, and tracks out of my unit to reinstall caches from GSAK.

I forgot to reinstall the tracks folder (the folder is still there, but it is empty). I have a copy of it on my computer, but the GC gets hung up on "Loading Tracks".

I tried power+up+menu, but it doesn't put it in file access mode, with or without the reset button. Pressing the reset button just restarts the unit and it goes back to getting hung on "Loading Tracks"
