Once you start moving the gps signal will make the compass in the GC work.
On settings - go to 'Map Options' - scroll down to 'Current Location Icon' - click on 'Smart Arrow'. The arrow will turn green when you are moving toward your target.

It's easier if you have map 'Orientation' set to Heading up instead of north up.

You can also have the compass overlay the map.
While on the map screen hit the menu button and map+compass.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

When looking at a geocache on a map (via the geocache button), one of the boxes shows degrees. How does this number relate to the cache? Since my unit doesn't have an actual compass, should I use a regular compass and go in the direction listed in the "bearing" box?
Currently, I line up my triangle with the green line heading to the cache and use "tracks" to make sure I'm going in the correct direction.
