I tried pointing it to the folder with the mud drivers in it, sees the folder, but the wizard says the driver isn' compatible.
At any rate, I've packed up this unit in its box ready to exchange at walmart, so when I get the new one I'll fight with it some more.

Those folks on the left coast ain't the only folks wisely spending their hard earned money on toys.
Us east coast yankees like our toys too.
My problem is that I'm now on a fixed income, I have to carefully plan what toy to buy next!
I just ordered one of those GoPro Hero waterproof cameras. 😛
Next month with my tax returns I'll get a kayak to attach it to! :woohoo:

Ok Denis, you're not going crazy, but I thought you were trying to run this on a computer :P, only joking! I pulled out my Dell Mini which is running Xp SP3 and sure enough, I'm getting the same problem you are, so give me a little bit to take a look at it and to wait and see what Magellan says.

Yeah - money, what is that!!! If it wasn't for the fact that I do most all of my work on this thing, I very seriously doubt I'd have a new one...

No-one's going to tell me that I need a new computer or to upgrade to Vista or Windows7 just to get nmea to work with a GC. Magellan must have some support for cases like this.
Are you running Xp SP3?

OK, I got the 710 to work on VP, changed baud rate and it worked. :cheer:
As far as the rubber boots go I'm a clumsy oaf that spent 37 years fixing locomotives and other over sized railroad equipment, I have to concentrate to work on/play with delicate equipment.

It is showing up in Device Manager under ports as "Magellan Serial USB Device (Com6)" and the Driver Version is 1.5.303.0 release 4/21/2009.
I also just tried my 710 and after changing the baud rate and the NMEA text mode it work fine as well. However, I really can't use that as a standard because I'm running BETA firmware, so I really can't say what the released software would do. However, it is working fine in the NMEA mode with VP.
As far as the rubber boots on the units. I've had my GC since the first week they were released and I use it all the time and the boot looks almost like new - however, as an former Test Equipment guy I never bend the boot back, because after 21 years experience with Aircraft Equipment I know what happens!
Hope this helps,

VP told me to install 'Quick Time' then I could install the drivers for the 710 and GC on my laptop running XP.
The GC works in NMEA on VP but not the 710.
I haven't tried on Streets&Trips.
I don't have time right now to play with it, maybe later this week-end?
PS - the rubber cover on the GC lost the little 'handle?' on it in a week of use and the lines formed where it bends a little while after that, I expect both units to lose the covers at some point.

Yup, I'm getting the NMEA icon on the GC.
Device Manager sees the device as "Compass", but doesn't offer a useful driver to function the gps as a device. Stays a yellow triangle. Maybe another issue with this particular unit....
I would still like to see if a 510 works... And David, can you check for me exactly which driver it says its using, in Device Manager - Serial Devices - Compass or GC or GPS or whatever it calls itself; right-click, properties, driver. Maybe its possible to e-mail me that driver, if you can grab it somehow .... don't know even if it can be done !
I'm going to open my other computer (desktop on XP) and see if it recognizes the unit in NMEA mode.
(P.S. Phil - the rubber usb plug cover tearing - I can already see a couple of little lines on the fold area of the GC which is less than a week old .... maybe we can get extras from Maggie Parts...)

Denis,
I just tried my GC and it works fine. I connected the GC to the computer via USB and selected "Power Only" and then went into the Connection Setting on the GPS selected NMEA and the computer immediately recognized it and stated that it was loading the device drivers. After waiting a few seconds for the drivers to be loaded, I opened Vp and told to it start tracking and it started working.
