What exactly are you wanting to know?

Yes, the seriel numbers will identify the different modes that are being made to these units like the new camera and the new screen. The first 4 digits of the eXplorist S/N identify the unit model and the 5 digit is being used as the mod. identifier. As of the current time I am aware that the "touch" units are starting to ship with the new camera, but I had originally been told that the new screen was still a couple months out; however, it appears that the time line on that last been bumped up after seeing the Ghost's unit! Also the GC is now shipping with the new screen as well and I would guess that the eX310 is also shipping with the new screen.

I have been following the messages on "new screens" since they were posted as a part of the new VantagePoint upgrades as they related to a new screen and a new camera.

I was just cruising around the Jungle Ghost website and I noticed that he posted a picture of the new screen and camera.

What I noticed is that the 4 wire ribbon cable lead that was supposed to be a 5 wire lead was not in the picture. Instead it was a 4 wire lead.

I also looked at his Explorist site and the screen replacement webpage. The site has posted something about the serial numbers. Apparently there will be a number in the unit to determine which unit has the new screen and camera.

I wrote to them and asked for clarification. The staff stated that the information they have is as posted. The information, they also stated, was not confirmed by Magellan. Just information they had found out.

All this information is nice to know and I thought that I would pass it on.

Oh, forgot to make a post for when my wife and I used the new eXplorist GC during our geocaching adventure. We used the new GC (the one with the new screen and firmware version 1.8), and the screen was odd. In the shade the screen looked good, maybe the same as the old screens, but in the sun the images looked like they were jumping up and down a little bit.

On the map, while trying to walk to a cache, certain images seemed to be jumping up and down. It is not jumping a lot just a very small amount, almost like the image is out of focus a touch. It is hard to explain but everything is still readable.

This is a new version of the firmware coming out for the GC in the near future that is going to make some really cool changes to the unit. I'm sure the word will go out quickly when it arrives.

I just had to buy a new eXplorist GC because my old one died; can't turn it on with new batteries or via the USB cable even with no batteries in it. Best Buy had it in my area for $130 and I noticed it came with firmware version 1.8 also. So far I have not tried it outside caching yet, just got it a few hours ago, but I will let you know if I can tell the difference.

I did contact Jungle Ghost because I consider the difficulty in reading the screen to be something of a safety issue when hiking above the tree line in bright sun.

He wrote right back and told me that the difference would not be enough to be worth the expense of making the change. I really appreciated his quick and candid response.

Thank you David, but I'm reasonably happy with my 710 & GC as they are.
A new brighter screen would be nice, I'll keep it in mind if I damage my units in the future.

Hey Phil,

I have a secret to share with you!!! If you really want a brighter screen, with better contrast in the GPS that you presently have - Jungle Ghost is installing replacement screens that are brighter, have more contrast and are faster than the present screens. I don't know all of the details, but if you truly feel that it is worth changing out your existing screens then you might want to surf over to his website at JungleGhost.com and give him a shout!!!

And when/if the touch units come out with the new, improved screens will Magellan update our 1st generation 710/610/510s? :cheer:

Or will we just have to buy a new one?

Being on a pension, that would have to be one heck of an improvement before I could spend another $500, or even $100 to replace a GPSr that I, for one, am very happy with as it is.

No, Magellan isn't going to upgrade all of the units already in the field. Yes, the new screen is easier to read in the sunlight, but it isn't a big enough difference that I would go out and buy a new GPS because of it; but I am glad to see that Magellan is continuing to support and improve these units both through hardware and firmware upgrades.

I have a 110 with the new screen and it most definetly easier to see in bright sunlight and new GC and 310 will be shipping with the new screens soon. The touch units will be a while.

Has anyone heard when new models with the improved screen will be available?

If someone has a new unit out there, it would be very interesting to see a full sun comparison.

I would imagine the screens are only available from Magellan or an outfit like Jungle Ghost that repairs the units and gets them from Magellan.
There wouldn't be much of a market for anyone to stock them for sale to the general public, they are not standard electronic parts or easily replaced by the consumer.

Most manufacturers will have exclusive deals with suppliers of special electronic parts.
One of many examples I had to deal with before I retired was Union Switch & Signal, a company that makes train control safety equipment for locomotives - they used a four wire capacitor made by RCA for one of their control boards that RCA was not allowed to sell to anybody but them.
When I figured out a way to replace it I was told by the Federal Railroad Authority I could not alter the equipment, only repair it as designed.
US&S would not supply us or any railroad with the parts, we had to send the boards to them for repair.

Thank you very much for checking on this for us! Not expected, but greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know of a place that sells replacement "standard" screens for our x10 units? Mine is working fine but if the price was right I'd replace it due to a small dent in it from being dropped.

Ok, just for general knowledge - the question was asked about putting one of the new screens in an existing unit and the answer is "no" this will not work. The controller chip on the main pcb is different and it uses an extra control line. I do have an eX110 with the new screen and it is easier to read in bright sunlight; however, it isn't a viberant in regular light.

Yes, actually I have and Ed (Jungle Ghost) is a friend of mine he's a great guy and he's always helping me out with things that conern these units. I was just suggesting to give him a shout - but I can do it and see what he says...

Perhaps someone will find out where we can purchase a new screen and install one ourselves. HAS to be available somewhere if Jungleghost is performing screen repairs and from the pictures that were posted looks pretty straighforward for someone with a little tech knowledge. Anyone seen any for sale yet anywhere?
