Have not tried other than 'start trip mode' due this problem occurred while hiking and not specific to geocache hunts. I was just trying to measure trail distance / time enroute... etc. I will try other modes and perhaps a keyboard lock while travelling might also help this situation?! I have e-mailed Magellan support for help but so far no response!

Thanks for your input.

I have never seen that happen to mine, and I used it on a cross country trip last August, Boston - Seattle - Denver - Boston, with it running in and out of my truck for 8 to 12 hours a day.

I never use the start trip mode, does your GC freeze when not in trip mode?

The only problem I had with it was while I was in Utah the GC, on the dashboard of my truck, got very hot in the sun and shut down. It worked fine once it cooled off.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

I have heard of the GC freezing at start-up but this is not my problem. My explorist GC freezes up during a trip (i.e non-route, start trip mode). After about an hour + / - the map remains open, fully lit, and will not react to ANY button function, including the power button. Removal of the batteries is the only option. This has happened on mostly extended trips (over a hour or more). Further I have updated the latest firmware (ver 1.7) but problem still happens. I would appreciate any help in this regard.

Thanks.
