This is interesting.

I tried to convert a GC to a 310. The update itself run through, but depending on Firmware version, the converted GC was cought in a bootloop or the gray service screen.

In my research, the last Firmware version that worked on the GC to make it a 310 was 1.12.

Since 1.16, this simple update was not successfull.

My research facility (in fact, a long night in front of my desk) found out, that the (310) Compass2WinCE.exe does not want to run on a GC.

If you take the GC's compass2WinCE.exe, the most of the 310 stuff is running. (But not everything).

So if someone has a GC, running 1.61 310's Firmware, I'd be interested in a software dump (exept the maps, geocaches, routes, media,  etc, because this only blows up the dump)

btw, the 310 Firmware is also running (partly) on the 110! For a good performance, there needs to be set a low detail on map and only few maps...

S!G,

The trick is to change the serial number of the GC to 0151....

Reilly,

It is an old trick that even Magellan Service uses in San Dimas.   In testing we take 510 hardware and convert them to 610 and 710's for testing.

In kind, we convert GC to 310's and the like.

The major point here is to make sure that you do not try to upgrade the software because unless you know how to change the first 4 digits of the serial number .. the unit is still a GC. Smile

Enjoy your GC/310 unit.

JG,

It is a fantastic modification, not sure how "corrrect" it is , but I am a happy man.

wish I could take credit but working this mod out is way beyond my understanding of the software / firmware. Found the how to on another website.

From my POV , definitely seems worth doing. I should have bought a 110 or 310 to start with, but I got the GC at a fairly cheap price so cannot complain.

Cheers

I hope that our members catch on to your conversion of a GC to use the 310 software.

It is an excellent solution to make a GC better and more functional.

Hi Phil,

No worries, I updated it to become a 310 , then  I added routes.

now it is exactly what I wanted.

Cheers

You cannot add a route to the GC.

The GC is a basic model made for Geocaching and not much else.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

Hi All,

I have just got a new GC and updated it to the latest 2.15 level.

However although I am ready to o and find a few caches I also want to use it for hiking and a bit of cycling off road.

How can I add a predefined route to it with waypoints? I have tried in VP, listed a start to finish route with waypoints , But I cannot seem to find  a way to get it onto the GC.

Am I missing something simple?

Thanks for all help in advance.

Neil
