I've updated it to V1.6 again, after clearing all memory - gc, wp, tracks. All seems ok for the moment. I still have 363 days left on the WalMart exchange thing, so lots of time to test....

D'oh ! you're so smart ! that's why I like you so much !

UPDATE - (problem update, not firmware update...)

I pressed the RESET button beside the USB connector (without the batteries in the unit ....) and it starts up and shuts down as normal now, last night at least. Will try several times again today, but it's looking good at least.

Ha, same problem here - brand new GC from WalMart, upgraded to FW 1.4, then to 1.6, still doing the same thing. The power button physically works and clicks when touching it. That's not to say that the contact isn't stuck inside, it is possible. But the unit just reboots every time. David - your services are still needed ....

So I spent some time on the phone with the Magellan support people and it seems that my GPS is pooched. I'm sending it in and they're going to send me a new one.

Funny thing, the serial number on the device (and recorded in the device) was a RoadMate serial number, apparently and that was an indicator of the screwy-ness of the software.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I have reinstalled the firmware, but it keeps happening. I generally power off from the menu, but have noticed that when I hold down the button, the same thing happens - the machine reboots itself.

Do you mean the physical button at the top-right of the unit, or the menu choice to Power Off?
For the physical button, it takes a fairly long push and hold for about 2-3 seconds to get it to respond. (This is intentional so you don't accidentaly turn it on or off if it gets bumped.) If your finger is not firmly solid on the button, it may be interpreted as another push to turn back on.

Have you tried reloading the firmware? It's worth a shot.

Hi everybody, my name is Julie. I got my GC about 3 months ago and I've noticed that it's booting up instead of powering down when I choose the Power Off button. Does anyone else have this problem and is there a fix for it? Or should I just take it back to the store?
