Some minor FW tweaks:

1) Change Icon on map view for found caches (so you don't have to hover over them to see if they're found.)

2) Make the arrowhead on the compass always on top. The arrowhead on the compass in Dashboard view sldes under the N,S,E,W icons. It sounds like a minor issue, but as hard as that arrow is to see anyway, it is even more frustrating when it dissappears all together.

3) Would like to have the ability to add/edit a Geocache. It's nice to be able to change the coords in the field when doing a multi cache or the final for a mystery cache. This too is a minor inconvenience as you can just make a waypoint, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

As someone already mentioned, this machine is as close to being perfect as we've seen since Geocaching started. It's obvious Cacher's input was sought and incorporated from the inception of this unit.

Exactly, no matter how hard you try to think of every possible situation, as soon as someone else starts using it they'll think up something you didn't.

I agree. I wanted to post some comments and offer to beta test any firmware updates but didn't feel the Facebook group was the appropriate place.

I bought this unit for Geocaching, which is entertainment, so as long as they fix things, I don't need this thing for navigating the wild :woohoo:

As a programmer I know how hard it is to test everything until you release it to a larger audience.

No problem, I was just curious. 🙂 The only way I had managed to provide any feedback so far with the GC was through their official Facebook page.

No. I do have a relationship with Magellan however. I also run Tritonforum, which is where I established a relationship with them. I don't work for them, and I don't get paid by them. I'm just a dude that uses Magellan's products, and wanted a good resource for them.

My two cents worth;

I agree with everything DanM-AZ has said.
With those improvements this unit will be almost perfect.

ps, please give us larger fonts everywhere, even with my reading glasses I can't read the descriptions.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

One more suggestion:
As soon as you tell the GPS to go to the cache, however you do it from whatever screen, the display should immediately switch over to my navigate-to-geocache suggested screen display.

Good suggestions! If you posted it here, Maggie saw it.

Alright, I got my eXplorist GC a week ago and took it caching. I'm a long-time, experienced cacher. I love the paperless caching support and the capability to load so much detail about so many caches! But ...

When I'm moving toward a cache, I want to see two things and two things only:

1) A graphical representation of the direction to the cache relative to the path I am moving.

2) Distance to go.

Both of these pieces of information need to be presented large enough and clearly enough so that over-40 eyes can see this info without needing to resort to reading glasses! It's easy to trip over stuff as your walking if you have to be wearing your reading glasses!

These are the choices that the eXplorist GC now gives you:

The Compass display:

Problems: The text at the bottom of the display is too small to read without reading glasses. The direction is given by a very small orange triangle pipper that moves around the circumference of the compass - also very hard to see. Also, the sun and moon icons add to the confusion if your eyes don't work like they used to. If I want to know where the sun or moon are, I'll take a look at the sky. I don't need them for finding a Geocache!

The Dashboard Display:

This shows the dashboard with two data fields. This results in a great size for seeing the distance-to-go data. No problem reading the distance without reading glasses. But now the compass is even smaller! Groan! 🙁

The Dashboard Display:

This shows the dashboard with only one data field. I wish that instead of growing the distance-to-go block, that the compass was grown to a visible size instead!

Which brings me to what I think is the ideal and should be implemented in a not-too-future firmware release:

Same size text block as Dashboard with two data fields - good and readable! The compass has grown to fill the rest of the space. The tiny orange pipper has been replaced with a near-full diameter linear pointer that points in the direction of the cache relative to your current line of travel. The firmware artists may choose to make the pointer prettier than the simple linear arrow I have drawn, but something like this is what is needed. What we have on the eXplorist GC now is a big static blue arrow in the center of the compass that just points straight ahead imparting no information. A real waste of pixels. Also notice that I have gotten rid of the sun and the moon symbols.

So Magellan listen up and listen good. This simple change is what is needed to make this device a very much more usable cache finder!

Thanks for listening,
Dan,
