I was just demonstrating how waterproof the GC is! 😛
My house is at about 40 feet but, in my living room the accuracy of the GC is showing 45 feet, so it could show anywhere between 6 feet below to 80 feet above sea level.

How often do you look at the satellite acquisition page?
Setting up the dashboard for up to eight navigation fields of your choice is, in my opinion a much better option.

Look on page 18 of the user's manual under dashboard options menu.
There are a lot of options on this entry level GPSr and it requires a bit of playing around with different set ups to find what works best for you.

The more you use and play with it the more intuitive the controls will become.
For a quick edit, from the dashboard or map screen press the menu button, go to edit nav fields, highlight the field to edit & press enter and the choices will be listed alphabetically.

Any questions you have just ask here on the board, somebody will help.

Wait a minute, were you really below sea level when you took those screen shots?? 😛

Oh yeah, I got the owners manual, and read it cover to cover, probably in January or so. Didn't lug it with me, but there's no reason I couldn't throw that .pdf document on my smartphone, and I'm going to do that shortly.

As someone putzing around without the owners manual, editing the number of navigation fields was the first thing that came to my mind. However, elevation is NOT one of the default fields when you take it to the maximum of 8 navigation fields, and you need to know enough to go next to the seperate menu choice of "edit navigation fields", and figure out how change one of them to elevation.

Not whining, but an observation; both Garmin units I have owned (a Gecko and a GPS 60 series) display your elevation on the Sat acquisition screen, without you ever doing anything to the unit. This here is quite the hidden feature, and I do think the sat acquistion screen is a good place to show this.

Well, there is no odometer screen as the post suggests.
You press - 'Dashboard' ;

and then press 'Menu' button to set the fields.

.
You can set the dashboard up two ways;

If you haven't already I would suggest downloading the user's manual from Magellan here - GC owners manual

We'll call this an FYI post, because I did a Google search, and found the answer on the Grounspeak forums in a year old or so post. But here's my story.

Showed up at an Earthcache which required you to take a pic of your GPS at a certain spot with the elevation shown on the screen, AND take two other elevation reading. So there I am with my 6 month old Explorist GC, and I'm like, wow, I have no idea how to do it! Since I was in a hurry, I just fuddled around for about 5 mintues, and threw in the towel.

This is how to do it, by the way: Groundspeak forum thread I was pretty close, I had added the max. number of navigation fields, but did not figure out how to go the the final step and edit those navigation fields. I figured you just got what they give you when you added the fields.
