VantagePoint used to have a function where we could choose any random picture(s) and associate it with a cache, then load them together into the Triton. But now since the eXploristGC, that function has been taken away in newer VantagePoint "updates".

Kim,

I hate to be the barrier of bad news, but I really wouldn’t be looking for Magellan to implement this into the GC and here is why. As I programmer I decided to look into this and I found a big problem. The GC “claims” to be able to handle something like 10,000 caches. Currently, I normally load between 1,000 to 1,500 caches so I used 1,000 as a trail number. After looking at a number of caches I cam up with an average of around 5.88 pictures per cache with an average size of around 100Kb. So, with a 1,000 caches loaded and 5.88 pictures per cache, that is 5880 pictures at 100kbs a piece coming up to 588 Meg pictures that would have to be transferred. If you look at your GCs memory you’ll see that it has a total memory of 1.8GB, 1.0GB of which is taken by the map and 13MB taken by applications leaving 699MB. So, if you were to transfer 588MB of pictures to the unit to would really be pushing it to its limits, which is greatly going to slow down a unit that is already receiving complaints about freezing up, and you would be spending a GOOD deal of time loading your GC before you went out! Personally, I believe that the cost of performance, time and memory is greater than the payoff of having the pictures in the field – although I too would love to have them!

David

I went back and forth on this question with Magellan customer service and finally got an answer. As you experienced, only picutures that are imbedded in the Description are transfered to the eXplorist - not the ones that are in the Gallery of the geocaching.com page.

I agree with you that the Gallery pictures should be sent, since that is the easiest and more likely way that a cache owner would provide a picture.

Maybe Magellan will pick up on this idea. I wrote a FAQ and suggested that they post it on thier support site.

(See my comments in "Picture Viewer" topic on this forum.

Well if that's the case, then I guess that I can stop bothering to load pix with the cache load, because the only real pix of interest when you're in the field are those owner spoiler pix that you have to click to see on the cache page 🙁

So how do you associate an individually loaded picture with a cache on the eXploristGC so that it shows up in a cache's photo list?

99% of all the photos posted by finders in their logs are just shots of the buddies they were with, interesting bugs or pretty flowers they saw while caching, or a "spectacular view from the cache" taken by their grainy low-res out-of-focus cell phone camera. I would not want to fill up my GPSr memory with trash like that. A PocketQuery cannot discriminate between desired and undesired photos, so the best thing to do is read the web page for your intended cache hunts and pick out the photos you want to copy and attach to the cache.

I would think that it's a problem with the way geocaching.com has the cache pages setup and the GPX file format is setup. It's probably not designed to support attached images to a cache listing that way, only imbedded images put in the html of the listing.

I suggest you make a stink on the Groundspeak Forums 😛

Is that a problem with ALL GPSrs or it is just the GC?

There are a few bugs in the initial release of eXplorist GC in regards to cache pix, but those will be resolved in the next software release. However, spoiler images and images attached to logs cannot be passed from geocaching.com to the GC because Groundspeak does not support. The only images that can be passed are images embedded in the HTML (descriptions).

I suggest you make a stink on the Groundspeak Forums 😛

Can you give me the cache ID so I can check it out myself? I'm pretty sure what you describe is what the GC does, but I want to test it myself on the same cache.

Ok so I was at a cache, couldn't find it, check the description, which made mention of a spoiler photo. Aha! My new eXploristGC has cache pictures! Looked for the pix -- no pix. Huh? I know that I downloaded directly from Vantage Point which should have sent the pix. Never did find the cache.

Another day. Reloaded all caches from GSAK, which should have loaded all associated pix as well. Looked at another cache that I knew had a spoiler pic. The only pix that were available on the eXploristGC were the pix linked into the description which show on the cache page when you pull it up. There were other cache-owner pix on the cache page which are linked toward the bottom of the cache page (below all the map links, above the logs), but none of those pix (that you need to click to see), were included in the cache load to the eXploristGC. This is where the spoiler photo was on the cache page.

Agree? Is this also you guys' experience? If so, that seems like a major limitation. I thought a major reason behind the cache picture capability of the GC, was to be able to pull up spoiler pix in the field, similar to being able to pull up the text hint when needed.

Comments?
