My take on Tracking with the eX710!

Today I went out for a 100 mile caching loop in my Jeep and I decided to start a new track with both my Triton 1500 and my eX710. In the beginning of the trip I kept both of them set to the default (Auto) setting, however, 1/2 through the trip I changed the eX710 to 1 second. During the second half I also played around with changing the profile from Geocaching to Vehicle for a few minutes and then back to Geocaching.

Since Justin, at Magellan, told me that the default setting on the Triton and the eX710 are not the same I was not surprised to find that my recorded tracks for the first half of the trip are very much like rswhitmarsh's - the Triton tracks were more accurate. However, on the second half of the trip, with the eX710 set to 1 second, the eX710 actually out performed the Triton. However, I will say, that for my purposes either setting is sufficient.

Another item that I played with today is the profile. Justin also told me that the different profiles are optimized for different travel speeds – so I decided to try the “Vehicle” profile for caching. I can’t say that I really notice an earth shattering difference, however, if it wasn’t my imagination getting the best of me – the unit didn’t seem as stable at walking speeds while set to the “Vehicle” profile, so it didn’t take long to set it back to “Geocaching!”

Later,
David

FYI: my post was a loop hike starting from the right hand side of the pic, and you can see that both units accurately recorded the start/end point. It's the QUALITY of the track--smooth/accurate or jagged/approximate that I don't understand.

I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO KNOW THE RESULTS OF YOUR 610/2000 TEST.

REMEMBER...THE QUESTION IS THE QUALITY OF TRACKS RECORDED WITH THE "Auto(Continuous)" SETTING.

Looking forward to your post :woohoo:

Explorist 610
Today I the the opportunity to check out the tracking on my 610. I made two 31 mile round trips on a two lane country road and left from the exact spot and arrived at the same spot each time. Both of these tracks were made with my 610.

The yellow track line(mornng) was set on the "By Time" setting, the blue line(afternoon) was set on "Auto Course". As you can see the "By Time"(yellow) setting did cut a few corners or expand a few corners. I had a map loaded in VP so I would know the blue line was more accurate as it followed the road more closely and did a better curve on the turns.

Next week I will use both the Exp 610 and T2000 placed side by side on the dash of the car and see how they match up with the same tracking settings.

So, I can't figure this out.

If users are having success with tracks on a 710, are you using Auto(Continuous) as your setting? Or are you using a spec'd time or distance?

Have you/other folks updated to fw 3.23?

My Triton track (above) is auto/cont and *has always been true*.

Why would the auto/cont track setting be the only thing screwy on this brand new 710?

Could it be that this things is whacked and needs to be returned?

ANY MORE HELP?

only way i can duplicate the triton's track quality is by setting the 710 to record at 1 second intervals (?????)

That looks as if the intervall (either distance or time) is set too rough. My eX610 produces a perfect track.

I've found that the track is as good or better with the 710 than it is on my Triton 2000.
It's taken me a few weeks to get used to the much better screen & controls of the 710, I was quite used to and liked the Triton.
Now I find myself wondering why I liked it so much. The 710 does just about everything better, different but better.

This is just my humble opinion, your mileage may vary.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

set to hiking, and I was walking...i wondered about the profile settings...this thing (eX710) has so many settings to tweak...a good thing, i guess, but sometimes i miss the simplicity of the older units...

Just out of curiosity, what profile is your eX710 set to? The reason that I ask is that the Magellan Rep. informed me the other day that the different profiles are optimized for traveling at different expected speeds! So I was just wondering if this might play a part in the track…

got a new eX710, but seems the track quality is not as good as the tracks produced by my T400; using auto(continuous). anyone else experience a difference in track quality? i haven't been out on a switchbacky trail yet, but this 710 makes a rather blocky track that i fear will not represent as well as my Triton. feedback appreciated. 😉
