I had a similar issue today while out on a short cache run. Had the unit in turn-by-turn mode and it was doing just fine for a while...I noticed the battery indicator was yellow so since we were driving along at 50mph and on roads we didn't know I didn't want to waste time changing out batteries and waiting for it to re-boot. So, decided to just plug in my FULLY charged 11,000 mAh new trent external battery and thought everything would be fine.......nope.. got to about 3 miles before the cache and had several turns to make and the unit was beginning to tell me to turn or something and it just freakin pooped out and shut down.
WHAT???!?!?!?!? Why would the thing do that? It was displaying the plugged in icon so it was detecting the additional juice and all....this stinks!!!! Only occurs when the turn by turn mode talks....

I have had the/a similiar audio issue with my 710.
Worked good on turn by turn, I was using the unit off and on for a month or so - clean crisp.
Then the sound/audio started to be distorated a bit and hard to understand, then I started having the audio just not SOUNDING OUT like mute or intermitent audio.
**USING PROVIDED ACCESORY/ADAPTER FOR CAR FROM MEGELLAN**
Well got the unit in the house today performed upgrade - DID NOT RECEIVE EMAIL NOTIFICATION of new version - SO I NEED TO RECHECK EVERYTHING - after UG
The reason I took the 710 out of the car and into the house was to perform checkout of the 710 due to the audio issues.
When using the 710 in the vehicle in vehicle mode/profile whatever -
I noticed the following things-issues during checkout with the unit in the house.
1 - batteries weak - start/powerup unit would not start up.
CONCERNING ISSUE DUE TO 90% OF THE TIME THE UNIT WAS PLUGGED IN USING THE CAR BATTERY ACC- not sure need to recheck this issue I really didn't feel my batteries in the unit should have been run down so much ---?
I wonder if the audio issue could be due to the weak internal batteries---? I will be rechecking here soon.
ALSO THE TOUCH SCREEN WAS NOT NAVIGATING QUITE AS WILL FROM THE FINGER TOUCH - could be the batteries also???
ALSO ANOTHER MINOR ISSUE IS CONCERNING NAVIGATION MENU ON THE 710
SELECTION TOOLS WHEN YOU GET THOUGH THE ENTIRE TOOLS NAVIGATION TO THE BOTTOM LAST AVAILABLE SELECTION IS owner information the navigation tool displayed at the bottom of the screen shows/displays a down arrow like there are more selections - BUT THERE ARE NONE - personally this is a minor issue but this needs to be resolved a basic navigation common function with the unit NEEDS RESOLUTION
THIS ACTUALLY OCCURS ON ALL THE TOOLS SUB MENUS LAST SELECTIONS
NAVIGATION SHOULD -recognize last selection and the only available selections is to navigate back or up arrow for last selection available SICK
Will after a quick checkout with the new batteries in place:
Audio seems better - still a bit distorted from when I first started using the unit in vehicle mode and with turn by turn audio - audio still not as crisp and clear as when first starting using the unit in this mode.
Also the touch screen appeared to function much better.
I'm beginning to wonder why the batteries are running down when using the AC adapter????
Was working better when the new batteries were in place. WHY???
I really don't like that the audio is not as clear and crisp when first started using the unit(Raspy) best describes it, ALSO that the batteries appear to make such a difference when using the AC Adapter

Thanks for confirming Graham. Now that is interesting about the brand of adaptor. Wonder if the Magellan adaptor is causing other issues like battery drain that a couple of us are suspecting.

Yes - but does the sound work when you connect the power adaptor to the GPSr with the other end of the plug in the cigarette lighter without the accessories key on?
I just tried it with a friends 610 in his vehicle and the tapping sound didn't work when connecting the power adaptor without the accessories key on.
So to be clear as to what I am saying:
1. Plug adaptor into the cigarette lighter.
2. Do not turn the accessories key nor turn the engine of the car on. Therefore no power should be going through the adaptor (the blue light on the adaptor should not be on) - it is just plugged into the cigarette lighter.
3. With your GPSr switched on, plug the other end of the adaptor into the GPSr.
4. Now ty and get it to make a sound. So with the 710 select a POI and let it work out a route and listen to what it says. Or with a 710 and a 610, tap on the screen menu and listen if it makes the tapping sound. It doesn't on mine, or a friends 610.
Hi Peter,
You are absolutely correct; if you plug the Magellan vehicle power adaptor into the unit when it is NOT powered by the vehicle the sound on the unit will stop working. Turning the engine on or to accessories then unplugging the unit and plug it in again restores the sound.
It is completely independent of the vehicle that is just plugging the Magellan vehicle power adaptor into the unit when it is NOT connected to the vehicle will turn the sound off. Unplug it and the sound returns. Both types of the Magellan power adaptor (straight and right-angled) cause the problem.
Obviously I have always had power on the adaptor before I have connected it to the unit.
I tried another brand of power adaptor and it did not cause the problem, so it would appear to be an issue with the Magellan vehicle power adaptors. I’m sure David will read this and report to Magellan.

Tried it with another Magellan power lead, but same result. Sound cuts out if I plug the adaptor into the GPSr before turning the accessory key on.
Just tried it again at my desk - so this time without the male cigarette plug plugged into the car cigarette lighter - and it didn't cut out the sound.
As Graham suggested - I'll try it in a different car.

That's when the sound on mine and another 710 that I tested it on, stops working.
btw - The GPSr has to be on before I plug the vehicle adaptor into it to display this situation.
I'll try with another power lead and see if it is the same.

I'm not sure what you mean by "if it is not powered via the accessories key position of the vehicle".
I tried it with the key on for power.
When there is no power (key off) with the plug still in it the sounds still work fine.
Then I plugged the adapter, with key off, into it and the sounds work fine.
Then I tried another power outlet in my truck that is on all the time, it works fine no matter if the truck is running or shut off.
Then I plugged the adapter into the 710 with it not plugged into any power outlet, the sounds work fine.
I am not using a Magellan power adapter, I'm using a generic one.
Did you try it with a different adapter?
The only time my sounds (click & voice) don't work is when I go from vehicle profile to point to point and back to vehicle. I have to tap the vehicle button on the profile page to get it back.
When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

I have found that the Magellan voice and that click sound when you touch the screen is disabled when you plug the vehicle adaptor plug into the 710 - if it is not powered via the accessories key position of the vehicle. If the vehicle adaptor is powered via the accessories key position when I plug it into the GPS then all is ok.
I have checked this with 2 710 units and they behave the same way. Anyone else notice this?
