This sounds like the problem I have been having where the position is updated infrequently. The tracking mode set to use a time interval of 5 seconds, so that the track consisted of a series of duplicate points followed by a long distance to the next point before the sequence would repeat. I never saw any relation with the speed as the problem occurred all the time, even when driving.

The first symptom was that the stop time was far larger than expected, which is not unexpected as the position was not being updated. The moving time was correspondingly small and typically would be only a few minutes after hiking for several hours.

Unfortunately, I can be of little help as the condition just went away. My 710 now appears to be working normally.

I was doing some reading on GPSr history yesterday and ran across a comment about position averaging. It said this was most common with Magellan products and a motion called the "Hula Wave" was used to temporarily disable the function when close to a cache. The Hula Wave was a motion of very quickly moving the GPSr from the extreme reach of your right hand to the extreme reach of your left hand or vice versa. It said this sudden speed change would disable the position averaging temporarily.

Does anyone know if this feature is in the x10's firmware as well? If so, does the Hula Wave still apply?

This is a problem I have only seen on mine with the last update.

I'm pretty sure the firmware update will be available very soon.
It's on the Magellan web site now but it needs a password.
That seems to be a mistake that will be corrected, it happened before and was rectified in a few days.
But I have no insider knowledge.

Out grabbing a few caches with the 710 tonight and I can say it worked better than I thought it would. It seems that once I am moving (no matter how slow) everything is great, and the second I stop it takes the gps awhile to figure that I am moving again. I don't believe that the gps is defective, but the firmware is. Hopefully the new firmware will help me out. Does the update come out this week or is that just a guess?

Ryan,

The new firmware should be available this week. When it comes out, if it doesn't immediatly fix this issue then take the unit back to the store and exchange it. My first 710 did the same thing and I had to exchange it. However, since mine came from Magellan I took it back to them and they found an issue with the unit. Another thing you might try it to RE-run the current firmware update. Sometimes that will straighten some issues out.

I think I've experienced what you're describing on a couple of caches. Certainly not all caches though. Some of them I've been 13 feet away and tried inching towards the location only to physically move about 40 feet and still being 13 feet away. Then if I move quickly, it catches up and I'm 40 feet on the opposite side. The commonality of all the instances this has happened is significant canopy cover (dense tree coverage.) What surprised me is that the accuracy was still listed at 13~16 feet.

set for time rather than distance, updates seem quicker (at least on the 310)
i travel real slow so i set mine for distance but updates are slow. setting for time gives me current updates but too many points in a track.

Yes, this problem showed up on mine a week after I installed the last (4.83) update.

Go to 'Tools' - then 'Profiles' and tap the left side of Geocaching to energize the Geocaching profile.
The track logging settings should not affect the distance to end readings.

Phil,

Can you look it up for me, because I'm still at my office at the church and I'm going to be here for a while so I can't. But I'm not talking about the tracklog mode, but the mode that the GPS is tracking in - it can be hiking/walking or set for a car or what ever. Ryan - Check your profiles first and try setting it to Geocaching or Hiking.

I forgot to mention, after you unplug the 710 and it restarts itself, shut it down and restart it and it will generate the file properly.

First try David's solution with the profiles, that may fix it.

Firmware version 4.83 is having problems with several users.
The cure that works for me is to connect the 710 to my computer, go to 'computer' - 'Removable Disk (E)' and open the USR folder.
Then delete the UGDS.BIN file. When you unplug the 710 it will generate a new file and the unit should work properly.
(It shows Removable Disk (E) on my computer, it may be a different letter on yours)

I'm afraid this problem doesn't happen on every unit, but it does happen on mine and a few others.
A new update should be available in a couple of days to fix this problem. The Magellan people have been working hard to fix this and it will be fixed very soon.

What profile are you in and what is your tracking mode set to? If you're in the "Auto/Car" profile or if you've changed the tracking mode in another profile and set it up for tracking in a car it will do this. Trying changing your profile to hiking or Geocaching and see if it helps. If you're in Hiking or Geocaching profile and your tracking mode is set correctly, then change to the "Auto/Car" profile and then change back to the hiking profile.

Sorry about not using the exact terms, but I don't have my GPS with me...
