Another program to convert coordinates PointPaste.

pointpaste.gif

In addition to the clipboard, the program can take the coordinates from photo and write to photo.

The page in Russian, but there is a built-in translation of Google.

On the subject of coordinate formats,

A handy Windows application is FizzyCalc to do simple conversions of coordinates to various formats.
It also also does high-accuracy distance calculations and projections calculating distances on an ellipsoid.
These caculations are much better than you can obtain from your GPS unit or most other software out there.

It's free, go here for it - FizzyCalc

If you have an iPhone a similar app is iGCT - GeoCachingToolkit
I use it to project waypoints in the field instead of my 710, it's easier to use than the 710.

I suppose there's an app for Droid phones also.

It's very usefull when you're using paper maps in local coord sys.

Especially in countries where all existing maps are in country local coord sys.

If you are Geocaching you would use 'Degree/Minute' to match GC.com, but not everyone is a geocacher.

I have UTM set as my secondary coordinates because if I have to give coordinates to someone else in the field, over the phone or radio it's easier to say "this is UTM coordinates" than to hope they know the difference between 'Degree' - 'Degree/Minute' - 'Degree/Minute/Second'

I have finally gotten most of my hunting buddies to get a GPS, so I convinced them to use UTM because they were always changing the settings and not knowing the difference, would send coords over the radio all jumbled.
In UTM they would have to send just a string of numbers that only the last 3 or 4 would be different from mine, because we are usually within a mile or two of each other.

If you are in North America most of your map datum would be WGS84, elsewhere in the world that may be different.

I believe the co'ords are for your personal use. You can have the unit show both sets of co-ords on the data display, so you can use Geographic co-ords on one data field, and UTM on another.

The image maps you import will have to be projected in the same format as your GPS is set to, otherwise you'll wind up with a large error in the location.

Can anyone explain what these settings are useful for?

Primary...System/Type/Accuracy/Datum
Secondary...System/Type/Accuracy/Datum

I know what each thing is in principle...I just don't get how it affects my use of the unit. When would I want a secondary coordinate system?...Can I display it?...Does it allow me to import images projected in UTM and then display the lat/lon coords?

...and the user manual is no help :S

What am I missing?
