I no longer care about saving power by turning it off, I bought it to use it.
I just have the screen light set to shut off after 30 seconds.
The screen I keep at full brightness, what good is it if I can't see it?
And I don't use the barometer anyway so it's shut off all the time.
No matter what you do these units eat batteries.
Get used to carrying spare batteries with you.
Using lithium or alcaline gets expensive in a hurry.
The best rechargeable batteries I've used are Powerex 2700 mAh.
Sanyo Eneloop XX 2500 mAh rechargeable batteries are very good also.
I also use Goal Zero portable solar panel rechargeable batteries when I'm in the boondocks for a few days.
An alternative is a HYPERKIN 10000 mAh external battery pack, I've found that this pack will run my 710 for about 20 to 30 hours.
This pack is about the size & weight of a pack of cigarettes.
You can find it at Amazon.com.

In just curious what settings people use to stretch life out of your unit between battery changes? The obvious is turning screen brightness down, but what about things like track recording? I'd use suspend mode more, but as it takes as long to wake up as it does to power up from being turned off its no use to me when recording gps points out in the field all day!
