Hi Phild31,

I reckon I just gotta keep fiddeling with this and get the hang of it.I've downloaded Vantage Point and I'm still trying to figure that out and am making some head way with it.
I'm impressed with the Summit Series and I will look into that Maps4Me you mentioned.
I've made a route on google earth and was able to figure out how to transfer it to Vantage Point then onto the 710, now I gotta try and do it again if I can remember how I did it the first time. LoL

Thanks again for the help, I'll come to this sight in the future for help and to share my triumps as I figure things out.

Again a great website.

I don't know of any videos as teaching aids, but this forum is the best teaching aid I've found.
That's why I'm happy to help people out when I can.
You will be amazed by the Summit Series topo maps that came on the 710.
They have a lot of hiking trails and other details on them.
A very good set of topo maps for the 710 are available from Maps4Me, look on this forum under 'Custom Maps'.

Also it is a good idea to download Magellan's free mapping program "Vantage Point" to your PC.
You can store copies of the maps on the 710 and transfer maps, tracks, waypoints, routes etc back & forth between the 710 and Vantage Point.

Hey Phild31,

Thanks for explaining the difference between a track and route, in your reply with the photos it got me to realize that I never saved my first track thereby not allowing me to start any new tracks after that. So I touched 'save track' and it then allows me to 'start new track'.

Thanks for the link to the owners manual I've downloaded it.

I intend on using this GPS for hiking and not Geocaching and need to become very knowledgeable with it as I plan to use it as a valuable tool in conjunction with my topo maps when I do some major through hikes like the Pacific Crest Trail in 2013 and the Colorado Trail 2012.

Are you aware of any good videos I can purchase or other teaching aids that will help me learn this GPS?

Great website and thank you for the help.

Oh yeah, when you tap 'Start' it will start making a new track, when you tap 'Save' it will save the track you just made.
The saved track will be the part from tapping 'Start' and when you tapped 'Save'.
The active track will show where you have gone, including the saved part of the track since you last cleared the active track.

If you haven't already, I would recommend downloading the owner manual from Magellan here - Owner manual - 710

The little booklet that comes with the unit is just a getting stated booklet.

OK, first a track is a 'breadcrumb trail' of where ever you go.
A route is the device giving you a direction to a destination.

As soon as it's getting a satellite signal it will be creating a track.
Are you talking about this screen?

If you tap 'Start' it will start a new track and show this screen;

If you tap 'Save' it will save the track and give you the first screen.

Tap on tracks to get this screen, then tap the menu, bottom right to get an options menu;

For myself I never use the start track, I just clear the active track and will either save the track I make then or clear it when I start going to a new destination.

My eXplorist 710 no longer shows the icons for "Clear Active Track" or Start New Track" I don't know if it's something I did wrong or not but bottom line is I no longer see them. I've looked in the Main Menu under Tracks for Clear Active Track and no luck. I've looked under Options Menu icon for Start New Track and no luck. Do I need to reset this to factory settings? as I recall seeing these icons before, If I do need to reset how do I do it?
I'm new to using a GPS for hiking, 3 trips, and I have yet to beable to use this unit to it's fullest capabilities.
Also what is the difference between "Track" and "Route"?

I appreciate any advice from those of you offering it.
