That's normal, we saw it while investigating the battery drain issue quite a while ago.
There's a little tiny magnet in the cover that operates a switch that won't let you go to suspend or shutdown with the cover off.

It would seem that Magellan wants to make sure the batteries are in while shutting down or going to suspend so the data on the unit is not lost.

Almost a rant but not really....

Just tried to turn my x710 off without the battery cover on and message came up "please secure battery door to enable suspend"....

Never seen that before...anyone else seen it? (and not mentioned it?)
