The active Track will use whatever you have set for the altimeter.
I usually have it set for GPS.

Speaking for myself I never really care about accurate altitude readings, so I rarely turn on the barometer.
I've always felt the GPS reading is good enough for my purposes.
Why use more battery power on something I have no interest in?
Plus the damaged Bursa sack in my left elbow gives me a built-in barometer. 😛 😉

I'm curious how this works out in practice with the Garmin. I sometimes do it manually with the altimeter in my watch when I know that at a given spot it's off by 100 feet or so. So I can see the value of automatically resetting the altimeter.

But what reading do you get from a Garmin GPS? Does the barometer/altimeter affect the GPS reading? Under heavy tree cover this might be beneficial but above the tree line I consider the GPS reading to be the most accurate and that's the one I would want to see.

By the way, what does Active Track on the 610/710 use to determine the altitude? Is it the reading off the map, the GPS or the Altimeter?

Hello, this is my first post 😛

You can choose in eXplorist x10 serie wether you want to have altitude coming from GPS or from barometer. But I don't see the option, as Garmin does by default, to have an "Auto" mode where the GPS and Barometer are jointly used to get the best of the two through an auto-calibration system.
Is this option somewhere? if no, don't you miss it? that's very important for me
