I set mine for distance, not time because if i stop for a rest i find i will get a bunch of points all over the place where i stopped. I set it for the minimal distance which is 15 meters (50 feet).

The GPS will handle 10,000 points, before it starts to delete the early points and replace them with new ones. I have traveled 160 km (100 miles), then hiked 12 hours in the woods and traveled 160 km back in a day and still not reached 10,000 points. If i go for a 4 day camping trip i just save my track and start a new one for the next day.

I found my tracks on the 610 to be pretty accurate using distance, not to many straight lines even when traveling in the truck at 110 km an hour (70 mph, the legal limit in Nova Scotia).

Oops, can't find the edit button for typos.  My last post should have said ...returning it isn't an option.

The forum is set up so that you can ONLY EDIT a message UNTIL an answer has been posted.

Thank you.  I'll change the tracks to Time and see what happens.  I bought this new..actually received it as a work gift and returning it is not an option.  Am hoping I will end up loving it because right now, I'm wishing I had stuck with the Garmin product.  And safe to say, yes, when I first received it, I clicked on every available setting and surely changed them all.  🙂

The default setting is automatic, it will give a point by changing direction, elevation and time.

I have found the auto setting is not very accurate.

Try changing the setting to 'Time' .

Go to 'Settings' scroll to 'Track Logging' change the logging mode from auto to 'Time'.

Then set the time to 10 seconds.

That should give you a more accurate track.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

They certainly shouldn't be straight lines unless you traveled in straight lines. Did you buy your unit used? If not, you must have changed something in the settings, although I have no idea what would cause straight line tracks. Perhaps you should return the unit to it's default settings - I don't have my unit handy, so can't tell you how to do this though.

I just got my new 610 and I don't understand why my tracks are showing in straight lines.  I am certain I didn't hike a straight line.  Is this something I can correct in the settings?  Argh
