well with the help I have gotten on here, rereading the manual, and playing with the GPS, I am much more familiar with it.
and yes, between the old and new it is like apples and oranges. I am sure one of my kids with their smart phone knowledge would do far better. I still have a hard time texting on my phone.
thanks again for all the help.

Those are property lines, they would be National Forests, National Parks, BLM property, State Parks, State Forests, city parks, conservation land and those types of things.

It would be nice to have a comprehensive instructional CD for these units but I don't think that is going to happen.
There are so many options on how you can set it up that a CD would have to be several hours long to cover everything.

The best way to learn these things is to keep playing with it, try different setups and ask questions here on this forum.
There are quite a few members that keep trying different things and try to figure out problems.
Plus the development team at Magellan keeps up to date with bugs and problems that we on this forum have found and discussed.

Comparing the new Explorist with any of the old Magellan units is really comparing apples to oranges, these new units are different, and better, in every way!

thank you.
I'm seeing what you mean. when I panned south of me to more hilly country I see where the shaded has its effect, flatter areas no effect.
on my maps on close ups I see different areas marked off in different colors, kinda like property lines, can you tell me what that might be?
after reading reviews on this GPS on Amazon and others I see many people have problems figuring things out, even with the manual. It would be a real benefit to Megellan to produce a comprehensive instructional CD to shorten the learning curve for those of us that find these a little more challenging, even if we had to pay extra.

Now the same area with it ON;

There is no instructional CD for the new Explorists.
All the help you'll get from Magellan is what's on the user manual you downloaded.
Did you download the correct manual?
You posted earlier that you downloaded & printed the manual, the manual has 51 pages.
This is a link to the manual for the 610 - 610 User Manual

There is no 3-D map option!
The screenshots I posted showing what you want will work for the maps that came on your 610.
Make sure you have the 'Map Options' set for the profile you are in.

If you are looking at an area that is flat then the 'Shaded Relief' won't have anything to shade and there will be no 3D effect.
Remember that it's not truly 3D, it's just the shading on the map along the elevation lines that gives the effect of 3D.

It may look pretty but it's not very useful when I'm hiking, the colors of the map are a bit too dark so I turn the 'Shaded Relief' off all the time so I can see the map easier.

what I'm trying to get is a 3-D map option like the ones that were previously posted here. they are on the front page of the manual for the 610 and the show it in the short intro on my GPS.
with my last Magellan I was able to buy an instructional CD that was very helpful. I have been trying to find an instructional CD for the 610 with no luck.

Tracker,

What exactly are you wanting and what are the coords of where you're wanting them, because I'm going to be honest - tech support isn't going to help you. Your best tech support is right here. If you let me know the area your wanting then maybe I can come up with something for you.

I have been playing around with it a bit and I know thats what its going to take. I also downloaded and printed the manual. the funny thing is that both on the manual front page that shows the pic of the 610 and the intro on the 610 that is in the GPS shows the 610 with the type of map that I am struggling to find.
if I haven't found it by Tuesday I'll call Megellan.
thanks for all your help.
I am pretty confident now that I'll find what I need and I'll be glad I bought the 610.

OK, I have to ask - are you looking somewhere that has some extreme elevation changes?
That's why I used the coordinates from David's screenshots to compare the 310 with the 710 on the same area.

Plus did you try zooming way out like I did on mine, the map scale is on 200 miles on the last screenshot.
The more you zoom in the less area is visible on the screen, so less elevation changes are visible.
And make sure the Summit Series topo map is checked on detail maps.
And uncheck the 3D option.

Then just keep playing with settings to see if you can get it the way you want.

I tried to use the settings you posted and thats what settings I had and mine don't look like yours, I wish it did.
I think that there is another setting I don't have set right.

If this is what you are looking for make sure you set the 'Shaded Relief' on.
But it has nothing to do with the 3D option on the menu.
Go to Settings - 'Map Options'.

Here's some screenshots of my 710 with the map that came on it;

When I get a few minutes I'll snap a couple of screen captures and upload them so you can see that the eXplorist does do 3D with the right maps.

I had a program for my computer called MapSend Topo 3-D that was great for my purposes. it worked well with my Sport Track Map GPS. when I started to look at new GPSs in my Cabelas catalog I seen the pictures of Garmens showing 3-D displays on the screens of a few models. I wanted to stay with Megellan and when I seen 3-D mode in the 610 I bought one. although what you are refering to as 3-D on the 610, that is not what is commonly thought of as 3-D by most people. I thoght it would be the same as the Garmens. I can live with the topo lines, I just thought it would have been great to have real 3-D on my GPS.

I need to correct a statement I made about it not working in vehicle profile, it does work in vehicle profile.
I forgot to do the stupid work-a-round to have the profile change properly after searching for a cache by name!

As far as 3D on the screen, I only really need the topo maps in 2D to find a good or bad direction to take.
3D might look cool but it's not that important to me on a small screen.

If you thought you will get unit with real 3D rendering capabilities based on hardware 3D acceleration then you made a mistake.

However,
currently there are no such a gps devides on the market.

Maybe I'm wrong but my opinion is that
most of better gps units from all manufacturers have "3D capabilities" which means they use some kind of isometric projection to emulate 3D view.
Something better would require separate ( additional ) 3D hardware which would, in the end, increase end user price considerably.
IMHO, I don't see any benefit of viewing real 3D on 3" screen ...
