For myself I don't care about combining tracks, I'll just have several tracks loaded to see them on the 710 or VP if I need them.

When I split a track I'll run it to the point I want the split at, note the point number and delete all the points, from #1 to my split point at the same time.
In this screenshot I've got number 1 through 59 selected, when I click the delete they all go away and #1 is now what was #60.

Inserting points in a route works but like you say, it's slow, tedious and you end up with a route instead of a track.

A route is used to give you directions to the next point, either in driving mode or hiking.
A track, at least for me, is to see on the map of the GPSr the track I want to take or to see on VP where I've been.

Basically, when I want a track I create it with a GPSr or load it to the computer already created. In other words I'm not adding points to it but I usually will remove some points from it.

If I want a route it's either a converted track on VP or it's a list of waypoints/geocaches I want driving directions for.

I'm now retired also but I've never had any programing skills. 🙁

My point about importing tracks is concerned with importing tracks or track segments into the editor, thereby allowing parts of different tracks to be combined.

I assume the method you use to split tracks is to copy the track and then selectively delete points, which is the procedure I use. Although this works, it is tedious, slow and prone to error. I would simply prefer to have an easier method of doing the same thing.

I must admit that I had not thought of your method of inserting track points. Clever, even if rather labor intensive.

Incidentally, I have never understood why the route editor in VP has different features than the track editor, even though routes and tracks are basically identical.

I sometimes toy with the idea of developing a GPX editor with the features that I want. But since I am now retired, my programming skills have atrophied, not to mention my capacity for anything that might be considered work.

For a free program Vantage Point works pretty well.
Yeah, it would be nice to have better controls of track editing, but;
-I split my track into two segments with ease!
-You can delete segments of any track without much trouble.
-To insert track points - convert a track to a route, edit the route by inserting points anywhere.
-You can import as many tracks as you have in several file formats.
This is the track import wizard of VP;

The track editing features are extremely limited and it is quite tedious performing any major edits on a track.

The following are some features that might be useful:

- split a track into multiple segments
- delete a track segment
- insert track points
- select a point in the right hand display position the left hand list to that point
- join track segments
- import multiple tracks or track segments

I have found several GPX editors but none of them work very well.

Nope, I was having fun exploring the area. 🙂
There are deer trails, hiking trails and old roads all over the place in there.
Plus a lot of bogs, swamps & streams.

But once I found the 'Cryptex' cache at the edge of a swamp the skeeters were really getting bad so I took the best route out.
There's six or seven more caches in that state forest to look for, so I'll be spending more time wandering around in there. 😛

For anyone that hasn't played with tracks on VP very much here's some screenshots of what you can do with it.

Click this link - VP Tracks - for some views of easy track editing and creating.

Yes, right click the track on VP and click play to see the numbers of the points you want to remove.
Write down the numbers and then right click track, click edit and delete the points you want to remove.
You can go straight to edit but the window size is smaller, you can't see as much detail of a long track on the edit window.

Make a couple copies of tracks to practice with or divide into several new tracks.
I save my day's track on the computer, name it today's date or whatever and load it to VP, then change the name on VP so I can load it again and do several edits of it.

With a little practice it's easy to edit out whatever you want.

There were a few times when I forgot to clear the old track when starting a new one. That produced a straight line from the last point where I turned off the GPS to the point where I turned it on again.

Is it possible to edit out these line on Vantage Point so that I have only the portion of the track that I want to save?
