I'm not concerned yet....
I just emailed magellan support with my situation just to let them know and maybe help them fix the problem.

I really like this 710 and don't want anything else. When I got it everything worked great. Only after the "upgrade" did I begin having problems.

I got a phone call yesterday from Magellan customer support to follow up the e-mail response they sent me.
I was told the problem with the update was caused by the update software, not my unit or pc.
They are working on it and will have it fixed soon.

My 710 has had none of the problems that Wanderer describes, in fact I've had no real problems with it at all!

I have to say that Magellan's customer support is a huge improvement over the old days. I bought one of the first exploristXL, every single unit in the first release had to be recalled (bad firmware) but I had to jump through hoops for over a month to get any response from Maggie.
And that response was a terse e-mail with an address to send the unit back. The replacement unit they sent me wouldn't power up, no response for two weeks, so I took it apart and soldered a broken wire to fix it.

MiTAC is so much better than the old outfit that there's no comparison.

The eX610 with FW 3.22 does not have these issues.

I did a 3.23 upgrade as well. I got/did the same as you. Info shows new firmware installed.
I wonder if it was complete. It sure didn't require "fresh batteries"!
Now when I assign short cuts on the one touch menu they don't survive a power off and on. calendar choice and screen brightness also revert to default options.

I didn't do much with the older firmware but I did make one short cut to the compass and it stuck, still there when the others go back to default.

Is there a way to get back to the older firmware?

Mel

edit:
I tried reseting the unit to factory default, removing the SD card and reinstalling the 3.23 upgrade.
Same results."file to large/cold boot" and units looses customized settings after shutting down.

edit2: maggie was no help.
Unit needs to be sent back to get the previous firmware. The default settings work so I'll use them until I can figure out why it can't remember my personal settings.

When I updated the firmware to v 2.23 I got this message on the unit screen - 'File Size too Large Please Cold Boot And Retry'
I held the power button down but it didn't shut down.
So I sent an e-mail to customer support.
Then I pulled the batteries, put them back in and it worked fine with the update installed.

I got a nice helpful response from maggie, pretty quick for a week-end and a new release to work through.

It seems maggie has vastly improved their support from what it was a few years ago. :cheer:

My eX710 arrived today.
I also have been testing and playing with it.
It works really nice!

When I have it connected to pc I just unplug it and it reboots itself.
It works perfectly and shuts down fine.

To scroll a menu keep your finger on the screen and slide it up or down.
With a bit of practice I don't click something by accident, very often.
Scrolling arrows would be much better.

I loaded 8852 caches (all in Massachusetts) using GSAK to GPS.
No problems loading them through GSAK.
It loaded exactly 2000 waypoints, I guess that's the limit?

When I dragged & dropped a GPX file it would load some of the caches and a few waypoints with error message on waypoint name list. After trying 3 or 4 times and getting different numbers of waypoints & caches loaded from the same file I gave up and just used GSAK 'GPS'

I haven't tried loading PQs or through VP and probaly won't, GSAK works nice and fast.

I'll put it through it's paces tomorrow, I'm meeting Randy of cindy&randy from the Triton Forum, he's in Massachusetts for business this week & we are going caching tomorrow.

I'll have more to say later but so far this thing is GREAT !! :woohoo:

My eX610 has just arrived.

I started testing the unit. It works really fine. Appart from many open translation topics (German), I discovered two issues until now:

Maybe we can use this thread to collect the bugs...

(1) After connecting to PC the ex610 sometimes does not show the power-down options when the power button is pressed. It only reacts on the 10sec pressing for reboot. Even after reboot, you cannot shut down the unit and you need to take out the batteries.

(2) May screens having overflowing menue items (e.g. detail map list for selection) there is no scrolling arrow displayed and you need to scroll with moving the finger over the screen. But as all menu items are selectable it is a random result: either some menu item is selected or the page scrolls... I started using my Triton stylus to get this done...
