Thanks, Steffen

OK, I deleted the UGDS.BIN file.
When I tried loading caches from GSAK I got all errors on the cache list and no waypoints at all.
So, I deleted the BIN file again and deleted all cache and wpts files. There was a small (1KB) GPX file with a date of 4/18/2011 that I did not see before, I deleted it before I thought to see what it was.

It loaded from GSAK fine, all caches, child waypoints, images and attributes.

1. The settings stay, do not reset to default. 🙂
2. The smart arrow now works perfectly. 🙂
3. The go to nearest geocache after finding a cache brings up nothing! :X  🙁
4. When at 50 feet or so it keeps working fine right to '0' feet. 🙂
5. It does not shut down for no apparent reason. 🙂
6. The compass stays calibrated. 🙂

Most of my problems are now gone, don't know if the UGDS.BIN file was the culprit but the 'Go to nearest cache' after finding a cache does not work.
The simple cure for that is I set a side button for cache list/description. 😉

I'll continue testing/playing with it to see what happens.

For Point 3.
I had the same problem. After I changed Menue (left lower corner) Geocaches to all (before it was found only) the result was that my eX showes now the next 50 Caches after finding one.
It seems that there are different settings cause under quick button (left top corner) Geocaches i had a different setting.

I think I still have a long way to go to understand my eX.

I was right to be very angry with Magellna in my previous messges.
I had a strnage "power management menu" when press to the power button
three coices were appearing.
1 power of
2 sleep mode
3 sleep
Somehow sleep mode and sleep button was doing the same...

Anyway, It was some days after I updated to the new firmware.
The batteries were full charged but I was sleeping the machine
and waking it up when need to record a waypooint.
Once my 610 has slept and never woke up properly.
Whe I tried to wake it up it turnt to "computer connection screen" although there were no usb connected. than it began to restart itself contiously and never passing the sand clock screen.
I took the batteries out and immedately send to GEOMATICS, the Turkish distributer of Magellan.
Luckly the local distributer is very suppurtive and helpfull in customer services.

They said me that it was due to a software error (ah...really !!!)
What I understood I was not the one who faced this "blue screen"

I think the EX series will not be stabilized before the 3rd update release.

Best wishes from the beautiful island Of Lesvos/Greece

Hi Steffen,

I just loaded a new cache file from GSAK and all the geocaches and child waypoints showed as error's.

I deleted the UGDS.BIN file and after the unit restarted all the error messages had gone.

So the UGDS.BIN file is getting corrupted some how. I have a copy of the faulty file.

Graham.

I don't think there's a distance parameter that limits the radius of the search result, I got just one cache that I already found that was 25 miles away. There were at least 2,000 caches less than 25 miles from me at the time.

And the feature worked perfectly for 4 days after the upgrade!
There is something in the firmware becoming corrupted over time with use.
I don't know squat about programming so I have no idea what's causing it.
After testing for a few more days I'll just put the old firmware back in if it's stil a problem.

I'm also seeing the "Find next nearest geocache' producing limited results like 1 or 2 caches. There maybe a distance parameter that limits the radius of the search result.

Graham.

I have only seen this problem with the new firmware upgrade 4.83.
Deleting the UGDS.BIN file fixed it.

Well - I am now a bit annoyed. In preparation for our 5 month trip across 4 states and 1 territory (which starts this Friday), I just tried to load 8,500 odd caches and guess what I got as a list when I looked up the caches in the GPSr?

"ERROR", "ERROR", "ERROR" - 8,500 times 🙁

Hope the Magellan guys are working on this and fixing it quick!

How come this didn't show up during the testing process? Should there be more testers?

This is a issue with the file UGDS.BIN (Don't know the folder right now). To fix this issue, delete the UGDS.BIN and restart the unit. The device will creating a new UGDS.BIN file.
Actually, I've seen this only on my BETA-versions. I havn't seen this on 4.83 yet.

Yes this is an error... Users in Germany also have it with the eX710

dwcarr1 and S!G responded to that issue in this thread https://www.exploristforum.com/.....itstart=30

I believe it is still a problem though that needs to be checked out by the programmers - also the "Nearest to" function.

1. I've had no problem with brightness setting.

2. I'm not sure what you mean, but the 4th window on mine is set for 'primary coordinates' .

3. The unit of measurement for UTM & Dec/Min/Sec is an accuracy setting, for alarms I think?

Leave it set at 1 meter and set the 'Units' at miles/feet etc.

OK, one more thing;
I deleted all my cache & waypoints files and reloaded 2,235 caches from GSAK, I got 2,235 'ERROR' on the geocache list!
It loaded all the 'Child Waypoints' & images fine though!

So I deleted everything, reloaded the update and it now loads from GSAK Ok.

This was in the past hour or two while I was watching the Bruins lose to Montreal again. 🙁

I'll be testing it some more tomorrow.

I had no problems for the first 3 or 4 days.

It's kind of strange, tomorrow I'm going to dump all my files, reload the update and see what happens.

Having to reset my settings all the time is becoming quite annoying.

To be honest, I have heard about some issues, but I can not reproduce anyone of them.

Sorry, that should be 4.83 my typo bad.

These are problems that I did not have before the update.
They have started to show up in the past two or three days.

1. Settings reset to default sometimes, not all the time.
Every 3rd time I change the batteries the settings reset to default and every now and then, maybe 5 times now, my settings have reset after starting the unit up.

2. The smart arrow does not work unless I turn it off, then turn it back on.
This happens every time I start a new go-to.

3. The go to nearest geocache after finding a cache brings up just one cache that I found 4 days ago. Nothing else on the list. And I deleted that cache from the unit but it still comes up even if it's 25 miles away from current location.

4. When approaching a cache at 50 feet or so it stops updating the position, when I walk 50 more feet no position change is recorded until I change direction and move farther away. Then I have to stand still for several minutes for a position change to register.
It reminds me of the old days with my Meridian.

5. About ten times now in the past 4 days the unit has just shut down, no warning, no low battery, just went black!
Every time it started back up and continued the route or go-to I was on.

6. The compass will not stay calibrated.
It starts out calibrated, then 10 minutes into a hike it's not working.
so I wave it around & it's calibrated.
Then 30 minutes later it's not working again!
Sometimes I have to go to the calibration page and have it fail to calibrate 5 or 6 time before it will calibrate!

All of these problems started 3 or 4 days after the update was installed, my normal routines have not changed at all.
The same cache and waypoint files are on the unit.

The updated firmware seems to be becoming more unstable as time passes. 🙁
