I cant find the file USB002.dat in the downloadable link Explorist_XL_1_55.zip once I unzip it I only get 1 Application called Explorist_XL_1_55
The file you seek is on the Magellan site and Download the "eXplorist XL – EU Software Version 1.55".
You need the Europe Version. Then extract the files copy the file USB002.DAT to your SD card and rename it "FIRMWARE.BIN"
Rhys, my apologies, forgot to tell you the old trick. Extract the .zip file to make a .exe file. Then rename the extracted .exe extension to .zip
Now unzip this and the missing .dat file are there.

UNBRICKING "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH " (BSOD) FROM THE MAGELLAN EXPLORIST XL
(Credits to "jcw696" of the Explorist Group at Yahoo)
The problem is most likely the internal memory being severely corrupted and needing to be reformatted.
PROBLEM: When powering on the unit it, it would just lock on the Explorist XL blue screen
SOLUTION:
1. Format a SD card with fat16
2. Download the "eXplorist XL - EU Software Version 1.55"
http://www.jungleghost.com/Exp.....L_1_55.zip
3. Extract the files. Then copy the file USB002.DAT to your SD card and rename it "FIRMWARE.BIN"
4. Make sure the unit is powered off, and put the SD card into the unit, then turn it on (it will boot the firmware off of the SD card).
5. It should say something about NAND, just press the enter key on the unit and let it do its thing for about 2 minutes (it is creating directories on the SD Card)
6. Force the power off by pressing NAV + MENU + PWR
7. Turn the unit back on, it should boot up into the 9.1.55 firmware on the SD card (press enter a few times to clear the startup screens)
8. Next bring up the Service Function window, by pressing NAV + PWR and enter the code 95 by using the up, down, left, right toggle (it is going to format the internal memory and you will loose you Basemap.. not an issue because we will download it later)
9. Let it do its thing for a few minutes (Takes about a minute or two) Once done, if it doesn't power off by itself, power it off with the power button
10. Remove SD card, and power back on... This should do it, but you are still missing a Basemap.
11. Download the "eXplorist XL - NA Software Version 2.10" and extract it to a folder, there is a Basemap included with this firmware, copy the "BASEMAP.MGI" to the internal memory of the unit and your ready to go.

NOTE: Delete the firmware.bin file you put on the SD card before you use in it in the GPS unit again.
