X10 Shows Problem When Subject to Low Temperatures
Recently a customer contacted us to explain that his 610 is apparently shorting out in cold weather.

This is the follow up by the customer as to the success of the recommendations to fix the unit.

=====================================

Mike:

Just wanted to let you know that I followed your instructions and everything seems to be back in good working order. The internal memory in the unit is now freed up. With the memory card out it looks just like it did when I bought it. I have a 16 gig memory card and back when I first placed it in the unit I checked the appropriate square to place everything in the external memory. Apparently that happened because trails, waypoints etc. all reappeared when I placed the card back in the unit. I gave it a quick trial by placing it in the freezer for a while. I then put put in fresh batteries and started it up and everything worked fine.

I think that it may help with another small problem I had been having. Recently when trying to change settings I was having trouble getting the appropriate "buttons" to respond. I have a feeling this may also have been a memory problem.

When I hike I have it on a lanyard around my neck and keep it either under my jacket if I'm wearing one or in the summer I open a button on my shirt and shove it in there. It has been more to keep it from swinging around but it would certainly keep it warmer in the winter. It certainly wouldn't be that difficult to keep it inside the car when traveling rather than placing it in the trunk.

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to help. I really appreciate it.

Happy Thanksgiving to you also.

Ed

Sir:
I have a well used 3 years old or more Explorist 610 which up to this point has worked well.
However, this morning when I left to go hiking I put it in the trunk of the car as I always do. The temps were in the low 20s. At the trailhead I turned it on and it booted up fine, but every time I touched the screen it shorted out with a hiss on the speaker and turned off.
After trying multiple times it occurred to me that it had worked perfectly the day before in the house and perhaps the temperature was the problem.
I placed it under my jacket and shirt and gave it time to warm up. Sure enough it worked perfectly. This is something new. I've used it several winters in the White Mts. in NE and never had a problem with the cold.
My question is are you familiar with this problem? Is it something I can have repaired?
Thank you. Ed

=============We Replied===================

Hi Ed,

Yes .. we have encountered this problem with the X10 Explorists.

In search and rescue we always keep the units, as our radios, in our inside shirt pocket for warmth.

However, we also found that after you have copied all your stored waypoints, routes and trails you should do the following to alleviated a potential problem in the codex of your X10:

1) Go to settings and clear all memory in the unit (don't forget to take out any micro cards before you do this.
2) After clearing go back into memory and restore the unit to factory settings.

Regards for a Happy Thanksgiving,

Mike
