Reference: 510 - 610 - 710 units.

A customer recently asked us a question on repairing the Magellan Explorist GPS unit that have the Virus Firmware.

It was a great question.

The Magellan Firmware changes the SDRAM of the unit. Antivirus software like AVG, etc. do not check the BIOS of the GPS. Nor do they check the hidden Partitions.

Now it would be nice if your could just make a backup copy of your software, erase it and replace it with a previous copy of the software.

Many of our customers did just that and ended up in big trouble. In many cases, creating the famous iBoot error which is not recoverable.

To fix this problem we must rebuild the factory software on the GPS.  So we have to completed REFORMAT the SDRAM of Samsung S3C2450XH ARM chip in your GPS and then reload fresh factory software without destroying your serial number.

Obvious not a job for the standard antivirus available to you from AVG, etc.

Now if my memory serves me correctly. The virus is time driven, meaning that it is a true Trojan horse, and just lies in wait to activate. My friend in Germany report that all can go well for any period of time and then trouble.

So if any problems start, providing you don't try to overwrite the present software, you can just remember that we are here to fix the problem, providing that you do not get an 'iBoot' error.

Regards,

JG
