Well, I've just found a new source of data....Cloudmate. They provide the extracts for a BUNCH of different places including individual states. They also provide the files in various formats including the needed shp format so conversion process is no more so that saves a step. Only downside about them is that they are a couple months behind in their updates...as of right now all I have available are December 11, 2011. Keep on keeping on I suppose. My first attempt was almost an utter failure to say the least. Got it converted and was able to display....junk here and there so dunno what went wrong. In the process of now a 2nd try and this looks much better but NO WHERE near what sockeye makes that are so finely polished. That layering crap sucks....wish Magellan would just handle the data like the Garmins do now. Seems like everything I'm finding that would be awesome to have is for the garmins. UGH!

If you get it figured out and make it work in an eX, let me know, and I'll give you a pre-loaded TimCard, and mail you a micro-sd card to load it onto ..... 😉

Hey Sockeye, (or anybody else that's done this and understands what I am looking for)....I've got my stuff converted into the shp format and I guess am at a point where I have to do some data modification & such. Is there an "easier" (it doesn't look/sound easy from what I'm reading) way to do what's needed to get the data ready for MMO conversion? It's a bit confusing just exactly what to do at this point from the info on msh-tools and a few other places. Just wanted to see if there would be some slightly less nails in the path way LOL.

Thanks in advance!

Ok...even MORE interesting is this... Website that has frequent diff build updates and is ROUTABLE based upon OSM data. It shows a couple days ago (4 to be exact) for the data build so I'm not sure exactly just how frequently it's updated but I'm sure it's pretty good. FULL world routable for garmin units. Now.....if I can only figure out how to get them converted to Magellan. They look nice in Mapsource..... no flogging me...I don't own any garmin equipment & the software is free so...now on to figuring out how to convert.....

THIS looks very interesting for those over in the Europe area....now only if it had USA data that was updated that frequently LOL...

It LOOKS as if they are compiling the updated data "fairly" frequently....I just wish I knew how to do it. So far, looks like you have to use osmosis & a couple other programs to extract data from one of the planetosm.com mirrors that have only regions or something along that line... Hats off to Sockeye for figuring all this stuff out! LOL

I'm not upset at all. I too like the change to OSM since it's the MOST up to date information available. I really wish that Magellan or someone would come up with a way to make it easier to take the OSM data and put it onto an Explorist unit. From what I've read...it's not REALLY REALLY bad to get it onto a garmin unit...just wish someone had the skills to make a "newbie" tutorial for the rest of us. There is a couple really good sites with information on everything nitty gritty about mapping.

LOTS of stuff on there about different kinds of maps but I'm just not smart enough I guess to figure it all out LOL.

I too have been editing my state (Indiana) trail data with gpx tracks provided by our state DNR along with several buddies of mine. We had originally thought about holding an event to introduce people to the ideas of making tracks of their hikes while on trails and to also show them what to do with it whenever they get home about uploading the data so that others may benefit from it. We all ended up just doing the dirty work ourselves tho and never got around to the event....yet that is...hopefully we'll get something together sometime. Would be nice to have a lot more people out there educated on how to contribute to the growing databank that is OSM.

I know everyone was upset about the forced change to OSM maps, but I for 1 am thrilled. The number of people now editing the maps has increased dramatically, OSM is now one of the best map sources for trails out there.

I've spent tons of hours updating the OSM maps in my area, and its fun to watch your changes take affect. I did the entire Johnathan Dickinson State Park already where Cacheapalooza is held.

P.S. I'd love to learn how to build vector maps so I can use them as an overlay to the sat photo's I have on the unit.

Hi,

what you can easily do yourself are raster maps. (images)
What I make, are vector maps. These are quite a pain to build.

Well, this does work but they aren't anywhere near as good as what you've done. Seems like this program will blur the images the further from center of screen that you chose to begin the translation from on the Magellan unit itself. Dunno if it's something I'm doing wrong or what but so far I've only done the 12,13,14,15 zoom levels. Gonna try the lesser zoom levels a try and see if they clear up any.

Thanks yet again Sockeye! I'm trying that as we speak! I have been reading about this for a couple days about how a person would have to have like 3-4 programs to do this. From what I have seen so far it looks to be GREAT!

Hi,

the best way would be to use Andreas RMP Creator. Read about it here:

Hey all....this is VERY preliminary so bear with me.

Some of my local friends are uploading/editing HUGE amounts of trail/tracks on OSM from the KML that I found from the state as well as their own trail tracks from their units.

What I'm wondering is, is it possible to download the OSM map data to put directly on our handheld unit or is Sockeye the only one who know's how to do this LOL? I really appreciate the work he's put into the update for 2012 data but since it is evolving rather rapidly in my area I'd like to maybe learn how to get the updated data put onto my x710 unit whenever they get further in the process. I currently have only knowledge of MOBAC and just tried that but got the "BLOCKED application" message so that route is out for me. Anyone know how or what I would need to make these updated maps to put on the GPSr?

Thanks in advance. Hopefully I've asked the "right" questions as I really don't know for sure exactly what to ask. Just that I want the updated trails that have went up within the last couple days to go onto my unit... Would like one big file like IMG or something like that I suppose. I've been using the import tracks function and it "works" but....yeah....
