Had the same error. Mine occurred sort of at random. I was running Verion 1.4 of the OS so upgraded to Version 1.6 but no difference.

Emails to and from Magellan support weren't very helpful and eventually found these forums. There is another thread on the same topic where it was suggested deleting the Geocaches and Waypoints directories.

Did that and unit started straight away.

Quite disappointed that Magellan support staff don't know about the issue. The other thread suggests it is something to do with corrupt or incompatible GPX files so it will be interesting where this goes.

I was afraid I was going to have to return my eXplorist GC to Magellan for replacement until I read this thread.

I did a similar thing to my directories when I was "cleaning up". I removed the NEWGEOCACHES.GPX and NEWWAYPOINTS.GPX files by accident. I was able to start up with your steps and then reinstall 1.6 and I booted up.

I don't know whether simply restoring the two files from the recycle bin would've worked, but gladly I didn't have to try that.

Thanks kindly for the fix! 🙂

Cheers,
AllUrCache

That's what I did.... I think I deleted some needed files in the Geocache, Tracks, Images and or Waypoint folders in the unit and now it won't complete the boot up. Before I got an error msg "Applicatio error. Restarting in mass storage mode." when powering up.

You can try the special 3 finger restart.

1. Fresh batteries
2. From the turned off state
3. Connect USB
4. Hold joystick up, menu and power button all together
5. Insert paper clip into the reset hole next to the USB plug and click it

This will restart it in disk access mode. From here I would think you could rerun the upgrade (either from VP or just download the file from magellan).

Worth a try before sending it back.

I would reload VP then update VP and try again it all again.
I do not use VP very much but it looks to me like any Magellan downloads need VantagePoint to pave the way.

Can you get VantagePoint to download to your computor?
Awhile ago my VantagePoint was not working very well so I deleted VP and went to download the new version of VP and it would not download, it did not know where to go because I deleted the directories the program needed. It ask me to run a CD to download files needed. I never did have a CD from new.

I had a devil of a time to get VP to download because of the missing directories. I was lucky enough to find one file on my computor, I right clicked on it and found I could pick repair. It managed to repair quite a few files.
I went back to download VP and it worked. I had to do two downloads of VP, the first VP download only went so far and said there were some problems. I backed out and downloaded again and it worked. Everything is working smooth now. Hope this helps.

Oops... updated and then it locked up with the msg "Application error. Restarting in mass storage mode.' Called Support and now I have to send it in.... NOT HAPPY!

I thought I'd try updating w/o VP so I cleared out all the files in the Waypoint, Images and Geocache directories and now I cannot get it to boot up. It starts to boot and then the radar screen just goes in circles forever.

Any ideas before I send it in?
