No change in battery life. I mostly use Energizer rechargeables, about 6 hours.

Generic Alkaline about 10 hours.

I have not used lithium much. I will check those. I had some expired ones I found in my first aid kit and they did not last long at all.

I have a pack of new ones I will try and see if they are worth the extra $$. I like them because they are lighter.

I use a Lacrosse BC-700 charger analyzer. I have one set of Sanyo 2700 batteries, two sets of Enloupe 1900s and two sets of Rayovac platinum 2100. The results have all been very similar.

I have seen no difference at all in battery performance after the last update.

The best rechargeable batteries I've used are the Powerex that came with the MAHA Powerex MH-C9000 Charger-Analyzer.
I will get 6 or 7 hours from them in my 710 and I never try to save power, light on max, no timer to off or dim or anything and the compass is always on.
The Eneloop 2400 mAh get about 5 - 6 hours.
The Eneloop 1900 mAh get about 4 - 5 hours.
The energizer rechargeable I tried were junk, 2 hours at best.

Get the good charger (MAHA Powerex MH-C9000 Charger-Analyzer) and use good batteries.

When in trouble or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout

I would not have thought the compass would make that much difference but you should be able to prove it rather easily.

The Energizer rechargeable batteries that I have been using for well over a year were not lasting. I was charging them with a parallel charger with a fix time and charge rate that came with the batteries.

I recently purchased a MAHA Powerex MH-C9000 Charger-Analyzer. It allows the batteries to be charge and discharged individually and at different rates. I have utilised the ‘Refresh & Analyse Mode’ to cycle the batteries.

This has led to a significant improvement in the performance of my old Energizer batteries. The reason, I believe is due to the batteries being completely discharged and the individual charging.

Graham.

Has anyone noticed that since the last firmware update the bottom has fallen out of battery life.

Prior to the update I was getting six to eight hours on a set of rechargeables. Yesterday I did an eight hour hike and got about two hours on a set of batteries. I went through four sets.

In thinking about it, it occurred to me that the one observable difference I've noticed with the update is that the compass now works. Prior to the update the compass was such a pain I had just left it turned off.

Is it possible that leaving the compass turned on makes that much difference?

I will say this, the compass now works to perfection. I was hiking through a wilderness area yesterday and lost the trail. By taking a fix on a pond where I knew I would find another trail I whacked straight to the pond found the trail I was looking for and headed home. Having a compass located right on the map was, to say the least, extremely helpful for the navigation.

I am very pleased with the compass right now, but disappointed with the battery life. I should mention that I have the compass set to switch to GPS at 1 1/2 mph.
