OH! I see what you're saying now.... :woohoo: That sure would feel great I bet! LOL

Fortunately for me I'm able to do the MOBAC thing and it's been pretty accurate for me using the ArcGIS images. I just wish I knew how to write some sources up to utilize the new imagery that we have for Indiana that's available for free that is as new as this year in some instances. Really sucks. Glad I didn't do the Digital Globe thing now....

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THOSE IMAGES phil!!!!!!!

I guess we should be whining directly to Magellan tech support about the city series eh? Maybe I'll fire an e-mail to them either tonight or tomorrow.......perhaps others would join us in this e-mail assault as well and perhaps get something done???

You'd think that they would use just 1 map "source" or database and then just run some type of converter to change it into whatever is needed for the specific car receiver since there are SOOOO many to choose from (just went there a few minutes ago to check map updates and there are a BUNCH of different models).

Yeah but what I posted is what is streaming now on Vantage Point.

I don't really care where the images come from but I do care about them being up to date, at least within a few years!

I won't be renewing my subscription to Digital Globe!

And Magellan should have updated the City Series maps by now!

This is what I saw posted on Digital Globe's website....from "their" satellite Constellation....

------

DigitalGlobe is a leading global provider of commercial high-resolution earth imagery products and services. Sourced from our own advanced satellite constellation, our imagery solutions support a wide variety of uses within defense and intelligence, civil agencies, mapping and analysis, environmental monitoring, oil and gas exploration, infrastructure management, Internet portals and navigation technology.

With our collection sources and comprehensive ImageLibrary (containing more than two billion square kilometers of earth imagery and imagery products) we offer a range of on- and offline products and services designed to enable customers to easily access and integrate our imagery into their business operations and applications.

----------

Sure looks a lot like either ArcGIS or BING satellite to me LOL. HERE is a link someone on here gave me and it has a LOT of REALLY cool layers that can be viewed using several different programs.

But down to the real meat & potatoes.....WE SHOULD BE GETTING SOME TYPE OF MAP UPDATE AT LEAST EVERY OTHER YEAR!!! Come on....surely those two units can't be that far apart different.....at least should be within grasp of Magellan I would think....

Yes, I've been getting regular updates for my RoadMate app on the iPhone since I got it years ago.
I would like to see an update now and then for my 710 City Series maps.

I found several roads in Florida alone that are 3 years old that are not on the 710 but are on the RoadMate app.
These roads were started 4 to 5 years ago, finished 3 years ago but with the Real Estate crash there's house lots, retail lots and industrial lots with no buildings.

But plenty of geocaches along the 5 mile long road.
Here's what VP shows;

.
And these from GC.com;

.
.
My one real question is what is Digital Globe, on VP, streaming?

THAT is one of the million dollar questions that are still out there. I'd LOVE to know about that myself....David, any chiming in you could do on this one?

Kinda gets a bit, ehm, "aged" seeing our brothren car navigation units getting those map updates and the handhelds...well...seem to be on our own....so, why have a unit that HAS turn-by-turn included (x710's) or optional (x610) with a FULLY stand alone product sku for sale if they're not gonna update them? I'm wondering if anyone out there has had the chance to look at the structure of the maps and possibly port them to our handhelds? Probably not gonna be compatible but I was just curious as to the format of those as well ya know.

I'd be "ok" with paying a fee for map updates say every other year or so as long as they're correct and would LOVE to have the ability to "provide feedback" on map corrections again like our brethren do on the magellan website.

A bit off topic, but that brings me to wonder how regular we will be issued with updated maps?

Same here....I've had several instances of turns with almost immediate jockey turns; with ONE of them being in a congested interstate switchover (ie 465/I70 interchange on the west side of Indianapolis) therefore I really don't put much weight behind the "chimes" & rather rely more upon the visual aspect. So far, other than a few out-of-date/incorrect map entries I've done pretty well.

Ran into one incorrect map routing instance this past weekend. Turn-by-turn tried to navigate me to an "Old Forgotten Cemetery" cache and took me into a road that USED to go to it but is now a cul-de-sac housing edition and has been that way for several years after asking the locals. Those types of things are pretty few and far between for me tho...probably had 3 since I've had the unit for a little over 2 years now.

Good illustration, but that can happen when there is a road close to the road that you want to turn into in a traditional turn as well. I have been caught a few times and have to look closely at the map screen to see where the green route track is indicating to turn.

Because I'm bored and stuck in the house for another hour waiting for a friend I found an illustration of a roundabout to demonstrate what I mean. šŸ˜›

If I'm north bound on Fellsway W and want to continue north on Fellsway W the 710 will tell me to take the 1st exit of the roundabout, then bear right.
If the chime sounded a right turn I may think it's telling me to turn right on Ridgeway Rd.
.

I used this map (Streets & Trips) because of the traffic flow arrows on the streets to indicate this is in "Starboard Side Land" šŸ™‚

I think it's set this way because it could be confusing when the chime indicates a right/left turn but you are not quite in the roundabout yet.
Do I turn before the roundabout?

The go straight chime for entering the roundabout seems to be the best way to signal the upcoming maneuver.
Then just take the indicated exit (1st, 2nd etc).

Down under in "Port Side Land" all the exits out of a roundabout would be left turns, wouldn't they?
Here in "Starboard Side Land" all the exits out of a roundabout are right turns.

Until you mentioned it previously with roundabouts I had never noticed the difference in chime levels. Mind you the wife maintains Iā€™m deaf!!!!

On the 710's with the turn-by-turn function activated, there is a very handy navigation assistance as you are about to turn left; right or go straight ahead - a set of 2 chimes sound!
High-Low = turn left
Low-High = turn right
Low-Low = go straight ahead.

However when entering a round-about and say you want to turn left or right you would ecpect the appropriate chime to go off - eg High-Low for a left turn (or 1st exit for us in Australia), but you get the Low-Low = go straight ahead chime instead.

This can become very confusing as there is a contradiction between what the voice command is saying ("take the first exit) and what the chimes are indicating (go straight ahead).

This should be fixed.
