I encountered the bug for the first time today. I Had 3 queries loaded via drag and drop. It worked fine yesterday and then when I turned the unit on today, it had the error. Nothing more than that to bring it on.
I deleted the queries (totaling 530 caches) via USB and reloaded 1 query (totaling 20 caches)via drag and drop.
The cache list on the unit continued to show the error and still showed a total of 530 caches. I then deleted all caches via the unit, then reloaded the same query (of 20 caches)via drag and drop and the list then worked fine all day.
The only problem was when I went to upload the field notes, I discovered there was no log file, yet the caches do show as found on the unit.
Hope this helps.

I have had the error on two occasions. I don't use GSAK, just delete the old files and copy in the new ones. I have used VP to load them but doing it directly is easier. Usually only a couple of PQ's at a time with a total of 500 to 700 caches. The fix is just delete them and reload it again. This last time it took a couple of tries. Never have deleted the bin file for anything. I haven't even looked for it.

The compass has never had a calibration problem either. Don't fix too much, I'm good with it as it is.

I testet the compass issue the last days and had no issues. (normally I set the compass to "off" ). When in GC-profile, I set the GPS compass to turn on at 6 km/h. The compass indicator went red, while driving in car. When stopped, it went yellow, and when starting to walk, it switched to white. Works perfect to me. I also have a early device (SN much below #4000)

All I will add is that I had absolutely no calibration problems with my pre-ordered 710 until I installed the last update.
In fact it always calibrated itself when I moved around a little or just waved it in the air getting out of the truck after going from vehicle route profile to geocaching profile.
I never had to go to the calibration page!

Were there any changes in the later built/sold units?

David,

Thanks for the update as I have continued to look at this. The faults appears to be in the handling of cache link list creation and linking to the GPX file.

I will stop looking now.

Graham.

PS. On the compass calibration, I agree it was there before the last firmware update. From when I took it out of the box.

I have yet to see a company put so much effort into communicating with its customers to resolve issues with their product. That gesture on its own is reason enough to stay with Magellan. Thank you all at the Magellan HQ, your efforts are remarkable and you should be commended for them !

One thought however.... For the compass to spin around a bit erratic is one thing, but in Track Up mode on the Map screen, is there a way to program the map to stay in its last directional position when it stopped moving (ie - 0 mph), or to turn the map North Up, while the unit is stationary ? Easily enough, remember the last direction of travel before stopping, and if the unit hasn't moved more than say, 5 feet, just keep the map facing that direction (or optionally, North), until the unit detects movement again.

I'm no programmer and I don't want Magellan to start a modification where it's too technical or complicated to implement, but if something of the sort can be done with a couple of simple lines of code, maybe its something to look at for the future.

Thanks again for all the hard work !

Denis 😉

If you've been having the Error in the Geocaching what has led to this happening and can you cause it to repeat? And how are you fixing it?

Q - How many GPX files loaded to unit?

Q - Loading with VP, GSAK or drag & drop?

Q - Using GPX version 1.0 or 1.0.1

Q - Please add any other pertinent information...

Also, what issues is deleting the .bin file helping to fix?

Thanks,
David

- I have 1 GPX-file on the device and 4 GPX files on the SD card.
- The one on the device was loaded via VP, the 4 other directly with d'n'd
- GPX 1.0.1
- I have used the newest fw version 😉 I have both ugds.bin files for research. one is 1640kb (the defective one) and the other is 1800kb (the working file). I havn't seen this issue since a long time. :S

Steffen,

Hi David,

This sequence produced errors (all loads via GSAK);

1. Loaded gpx file 2500 caches (approximately).
2. loaded small gpx file with approximatly 200 caches identical to ones in 1. No errors at this point.

3. Deleted the smaller gpx file. Caches from the deleted file now showing error. If you look under 'Options' on any of the caches you see which file they were loaded from.

4. Deleted the larger gpx file (all gpx files now deleted).
5. Loaded a single new gpx file. All caches now showing error. Looking under 'Options' all the caches indicate they were from the gpx file loaded in 1 above even though that file has been deleted.

6. Deleted just the BIN file and all caches loaded in 5 above now OK. A check under 'Options' now shows the correct file.

Graham.

Couple of extra notes to go with that...

When marking the three of four as found, I had used the four corners menu.

When marking as found, I always selected No for adding notes.

This is a reliably reproducable issue on my 610. Yesterday, I loaded four caches via GSAK onto the 610 and had marked three of those as found. Today, I loaded about a hundred via GSAK and it generated the list Error again. However, it said there were only two caches on the 610. So, I loaded the same hundred or so caches via GSAK - error still present but now there's only 1 cache listed. Loaded from GSAK again - no caches present on 610. Loaded from GSAK one more time and it properly shows the newly loaded caches.

Loaded a different set of 238 caches via GSAK - worked fine.

Marked 5 random caches as found using the hard button to pull up the menu. Loaded new set of 15 caches via GSAK - On reboot, received a "Restarting to improve performance message". Pulled up Geocache list using hard button - Error listed for 238 caches. Deleted all files under Geocaches and ImagesGeocaches folders. Rebooted - still shows 238 caches with error for description. Deleted UGDS.BIN file, rebooted - shows 0 caches as expected.

Loaded a new set of 37 caches via VP. Rebooted. List displays properly. Marked 5 as found. Loaded 15 caches via VP. Rebooted - 26 caches listed all marked as error. Deleted only the UGDS.BIN file, rebooted - shows 52 caches properly.

Hope this helps.

Matt

Thanks,

I've reported all of this to Magellan and I don't think we're going to need any luck. They're most definetly listening and they want this fixed even more so than we do.

Hi David,

just had have this issue yesterday.

1 GPX File with aprox 4000 Caches V1.01

Loaded with GSAK

Didn't delete the caches on my eX710 but just the GPX file when my eX was attached to the Computer

Deleting the UGDS.bin and reboot solved the problem

Good Luck with Maggie

I was able to create the list error again. I had about 2300 caches on the 610 in one GPX file. Had found 3 of them over the past couple of days and marked them as found. Did a cancel route before loading new caches with GSAK. Loaded 212 caches with the option of clearing the caches, waypoints, notes, and pictures on the 610 prior to loading. Disconnected USB. 610 booted up and showed error for every geocache. Interesting item is that it shows there are 462 caches(edit: That was 462 caches listed in nearest mode. It was 2308 caches total. Although, when I changed the order to by cache name, it showed 2310 caches total.) in the data file.

I then created a new database in GSAK and imported the GPX file on the 610. It imported 212 caches with no errors, no obvious data anomalies.

I've made a backup of the 610 if you need any of the files. For now, I need to clear it and load it for the weekend.

(edit #2: reloading from GSAK without changing the file structure resulted in proper operation.)

The first couple of times I encountered this, I had thought I forgot to "eject" the usb device from Windows. However, I've had it happen twice while being absolutely certain about the proper "eject" procedure.

I've never had this issue happen when there were no existing GPX files on the 610 which is something I do frequently.

Once when it showed Error for each of the caches, I looked at the map and it showed all of the caches. Except, all of the caches were shifted approximately 2 miles west of their actual coords.

To recover from this, I've always had to delete the GPX file(s) from the 610.

I've had this situation occur when loading as few as 35 caches.

I'm using GPX 1.0.1

I guess, this will not help in any way :S

I think it will help, it seems to me the update does not always load properly.
I have loaded the update 3 times and have gotten 3 different sets of problems.
Not everyone has the same problems, some people have no problems!
What is wrong on mine now I can work around so I'll leave it as it is until the next update and hope they fix it.

Q - How many GPX files loaded to unit?
I have seen it after loading GPX file over existing file. I have not found a trigger to cause it.

Q - Loading with VP, GSAK or drag & drop?
GSAK version 7.7.4.21

Q - Using GPX version 1.0 or 1.0.1
I assume 1.0.1, PQs to GSAK to 710.

Q - Please add any other pertinent information...
Deleting only the UGDS.BIN has fixed it every time. It appears to cause a re-indexing of the database which is indicated at the bottom of the screen in black writing.

I have a saved copy of a UGDS.BIN file after I had the errors if that would help Magellan.

Also, what issues is deleting the .bin file helping to fix?

I have never delete the UGDS.BIN to fix other issues. The map spinning etc, I have always fixed by re-calibrating the compass although it's difficult and requires 4 or more goes via the calibration routine.

Thanks,
Graham

One more quick question - which version of GSAK are you using?

If you've been having the Error in the Geocaching what has led to this happening and can you cause it to repeat? And how are you fixing it?

Q - How many GPX files loaded to unit?
A - From one to 4567, I tried it with several different size PQs on VP, several sizes of GPX files from GSAK.

Q - Loading with VP, GSAK or drag & drop?
A - All 3 methods

Q - Using GPX version 1.0 or 1.0.1
A - version 1.0.1 - I have not tried version 1.0

Q - Please add any other pertinent information...
A - Does not seem to matter if GPX files are already loaded on the unit or there are no GPX files on the unit.
Using just Communicator I get no problems adding caches one at a time.

Also, what issues is deleting the .bin file helping to fix?

When I delete the UGDS.BIN file and the Magellan_Geocache_Extention.GPX file all the issues are fixed.
If I tap 'Cancel Route' or 'Go to Nearest Cache' after marking 'Found' the compass starts spinning, the smart compass stops working, the unit stops tracking movement and all my settings go to default. The only way to fix it is to delete the UGDS.BIN & Magellan_Geocache_Extention.GPX files.
The unit is totally useless until those files are deleted!

Not a happy time when 25 miles from a computer! 🙁

Thanks,
David

Also;

Sometimes (2 or 3 times now) it goes haywire for no apparent reason, while I'm walking along just looking at it tracking it just stops working.

I hope they figure it out soon, when does the warranty expire?
