Wonder if there is a difference in the quality? also I wonder how the heck we can test it?

The adapter in the photo came with the 'Magellan Premium Car Kit for iPhone'.
I did not order it separately from Magellan.

The Magellan adapter I did order from Magellan is straight & also works with no problems.
Plus two generic adapters I have also work fine.

I have the straight version. I noticed the product photos show an angled connector.

Peter,

They are a little hard to get at, you may find it easier to cannibalise an old device and measure from the back of the socket. Link to wiring schematic below;

OK - I have a volt meter. Do I touch the outside of the connector with the red probe and earth the black?

btw - my friend believes that his vehicle adaptor doesn't work properly either.

Peter,

I’m using the straight plug one with no problems; you could have a faulty one or an issue with the vehicle connection. Check that you are getting 5V under load, 1A maximum.

I just went out to the truck to check, I'm using the Magellan adapter that came with the 'Magellan Premium Car Kit for iPhone'.
This adapter has a right angle usb plug.
This is the adapter I'm using;

Were you using the Magellan power adaptor or another power source?

Some kind of clip would be a good idea.
What I would like to see is the socket straight like on the GC, not at an angle like the 510/610/710 is.

I have never had the batteries bleed off while the usb plug was hooked up.
Right now I'm in a motel in Yemassee, South Carolina on my way home to Boston from Florida. I used my 710 in my truck all day, every day on the 6 day drive from home to Port Saint Lucie, Florida, I stopped to get over 150 caches and changed the Powerex 2700 mAh rechargeable batteries once in six days!

The usb socket in my 710 has become a little loose but I have had no problems with it.

I'll send you an email.

No issues with my 610. I have used the both a Garmin and a Magellan adapter. They both work fine.

The windshield mount from Magellan is a bit annoying though.

No we don't have a problem with the connection - they are both very tight and the power icon is on all the time (well every time I look at it in any case)

I am interested in trying other power sources like David has mentioned to see if it still happens.

It's easy to see if the connection is good... the USB Power icon appears instead of the battery gauge and the backlight stays on all the time. I was thinking the same thing with the Energizer NiMH batteries I was using, which are pure garbage, but haven't had it happen with the latest set I bought.

I have had this problem with my previous 710 and there were two causes.

1. The USB socket/plug becomes a loose fit and the USB cord would drops down a bit and interrupted the connection. Trips on rough road caused it to happen quickly.

2. The USB socket in the unit developed excessively movement and the electrical connection to the PCB parted. Before it parted completely I could move the USB cord and the connection would come and go.

In both cases the charge icon would disappear while I was driving and if I didn’t notice it the unit of cause was running on batteries.

Graham.

Also to add to it, I also use the USB cable with a Duracell USB Charger/Battery and I have the same out come. I toss the USB Battery in my back pack and it runs the GPS for hours and hours and then when I need to I disconnect it and the unit always has its charge - but again this is not the actual car adaptor...

I don't use the Magellan Car Adaptor, but I do use a regular USB cable with a cheap $1 adaptor that I bought off of eBay and I don't have any problems with it. There have been times when my GPS is reading yellow on the power meter and I plug it into my 4 wheel drive and head out and use it for hours in the truck and when I disconnect it always reads right where it was or higher than when I plugged it in - so no, I don't see this problem. However, I will say that this is with my 710, because it is normally the main GPS that I use. I haven't tested it with GC, 110 or 310.

A couple of us have become suspicious of the car power adaptor - we don't think it actually SAVES "AA bateries in the device while connected"!

We have the GPS in the car for quite a few hours when we cache (we need to travel long distances for our next nearest) and we find that the batteries are "used up" as we only get a couple of hours use after a long drive.

This is so for the 610 and the 710.

Anyone else have this suspicion?
