Yes - my GPSr does the same sometimes which is very annoying especially when you are directing a group of people to GZ and then you suddenly tell them that we overshot the mark. I tend to then get a lot of groans and distrusting looks:(
It sort of stalls at the crucial time (probably all the time, but I see it at the crucial time)and then kicks in again after you have passed the mark.
I have mentioned this before on this forum, but I don't see that it has been taken up by Magellan as an issue.

Not sure if this problem is related to the spinning compass or not but it is very aggravating. While geocaching and heading toward GZ I sometimes will get within 10' and my 710 will switch directions and put GZ as 10' behind me I go back and it switches directions again.

I Could understand this if it is under heavy canopy of trees or something but this happens in the wide open area under clear skies.

At times I have had my 710 compass completely spinning as well and when I turn unit off and back on again the spinning stops.

I've been in touch with my Magellan contact in the UK (Sales Manager) and he keeps assuring me that Magellan are doing all they can and he passed on the info to their tech people. But... still no fix after several months.
I actually got my 710 on extended loan from Magellan to do a geocaching review after complaining about their lack of UK support or information about their products - they've only recently been launched in the UK. It was very nice of them to let me have the 710 like that and I did write an extensive review as I was very impressed with it but the spinning compass makes it all but unusable. I've packed in back up in the box now and gone back to my Oregon. I'm sorry, but if Magellan can't sort this out soon they can have it back.

My experience of Magellan as a company has been very negative so far (the UK part of it that is - I can't say what Magellan worldwide is like) which is a great shame as I think their products are far better than Garmin! Oh well, we shall see what happens.

Hello everyone!

I am new to this site and this is my first gps receiver, purchased only
10 days ago. It is the explorist 610 with the Summit Series Canada maps.
I have spent the last few days familiarizing myself with the various
functions and have taken it on a few small hikes. It has worked great, but
last night it went into the dreaded spinning compass mode. This happened just
after I changed the auto zoom map mode to on from off. My battery level was
medium with rechargeables. I could not recalibrate the compass so I shut the
unit off and after restarting, everything was back to normal. The only other
changes I made to the unit prior to this spinning was overlaying the compass
on the map screen.
I am only posting this in the hope it may help troubleshoot this problem and
help find a fix to remedy this for the upcoming (I hope) firmware release.

I'm happy to help anyway I can.

I just went on a 4 mile hike for a night multi-cache with 9 stages, each with a puzzle to solve and the compass worked perfectly all night! kiss

That was after three straight days of the compass spinning like a top and never calibrating. :side:
So of course when I got home and turned the 710 on to connect to the PC the compass was spinning like a top again! :silly:

I will be happy when they figure out this bug.

Phil,

As soon as I get the information I'll pass it on to you. ShortcutKicksy - I also sent my 710 to Eric and just got it back the other day and they're doing everything in their power to figure these issues out so that they can fix them.

Yeah, I'll do that.
As long as someone tells me how! 🙂

Magellan would like the opportunity to test a full dump of your unit's files on a live unit. Magellan has asked me and David (dwcarr1) to relay FTP information for anyone who feels up to the task. Reply to this post and one of us will get back to you.

I will be traveling out of the country this upcoming week, so a response from me might be slow.
