Always glad to have a beta tester around! (JK) It is very reassuring to know it will take the shock.

I dropped my Garmin Etrex Vista HCx from 3 feet onto a gravel parking lot and cracked the screen. I was surprised.

I like the recessed screen on the x10's. That is a good design element.

This thread inspired me to modify my lanyard as well, as I also hated the spinning.

The final result:

I just purchased the "eXplorist Handlebar Mount".
This came with a mount for the 5/6/710, which I directly placed on my bike.

There was another part for the GC/310, which just was laying on my desk.
Suddenly, I got a idea for a nice DIY-project.
It's kind of experimental, but I guess, you all see, what I made...

Naw, the 710 doesn't need any extra protection except a screen protector.
It's actually quite easy to clean, just wipe it off or rinse the mud off.

My problem is me!
If I can ever remember to use my lanyard I wouldn't be doing these impromptu field abuse tests. 😛

Hi Phil,

perhaps you should use a neopren diving suit for your Magellan?

And there are also such little cute climbing-helmets, matching your GPS.

Or take an old football and fill it with wadding. Put your Magellan into it. That's the right protector for your device... 😉

Greetings,

Excellent, Phil, this certainly seems to be a great community!

I'll be back with more questions soon.

Rick,

Call me Phil, it's a little easier than phild31 & better than hey you.
It's a better forum when we are reasonably friendly, we can help each other easier that way.

When I dropped it in the river I almost had a heart attack!
It looked like it was floating but it was being moved by the current in a tangle of branches.
I have found out since then that it does NOT float!
Yeah, I dropped it a few days ago in about a foot of water.
Sometimes I can be a little clumsy, that's why Homer is my avatar. 😛

I will recommend a screen protector for it. The ZAGG protectors are the best.
They don't make one for the x10s yet but I got one for an explorist XL and cut it to fit.

Thanks again for your answers, Phil (is it ok to call you Phil? As I mentioned in my first post, this is the first forum I've participated in and I don't know the protocol - you're certainly welcome to call me Rick).

Yes I have had some accidental screen touches when carrying it this way - I'll try locking the screen next time.

Boy, that's amazing the amount of punishment the unit will take - I haven't dropped mine yet but I have used it in drizzle with no problems that I noticed.

No, it can't build up enough for anything like that.

What it can do is the touch screen might get hit by accident, you can lock out the touch screen so that won't happen though.
It will keep tracking while it's locked out and it will continue making a track. The track will not be as accurate under your coat as when it's in the open but good enough to back track with.

So far I've dropped my 710 in the Charles River in Boston, dropped it 10 feet on some rocks and had it fall off the hood of my truck at 20 mph and it survived all that with-out a problem.
This thing seems to be pretty tough!

When the unit is on a lanyard under my coat and moving against my clothing while I'm walking, is there a danger of static electricity building up and damaging the unit?

The loop strap on the 710 is a double sided velcro strap.

like your lanyard Phild31, gotta make me one of them. Your color combo looks like it would work good with my 610. Might cut some strap off my alice pack and see what I can come up with. thanks for the idea.

I don't use a carabiner because if it's not on a lanyard it's in the case on my belt.
So I re-did the lanyard, I forget who posted a picture with this type of modification but I copied it.
It hangs straight without twisting around;

After having used my 610 this weekend I too have discovered the swinging of the unit and touching the screen syndrome. I thought out a way to carabiner mount or lanyard mount the eX so the screen stays outwards....

The last pic shows it the best. I had my wife modify the clip-on section of a lanyard. Removed the small clip that was there, and stitched the short lanyard directly to the unit. On the opposite end there's another row of stitching, so when the carabiner is on there, it doesn't come in contact with the bottom loop of the unit, and is wide enough to prevent the unit from twisting and contacting your pants or jacket.

To use with the neck lanyard, you'll see in one of the pics, you just loop the free end of the short lanyard back through the black clip, and secure the loop back onto itself at the unit end with a standard keychain loop thingy. Quick to switch, and the unit doesn't seem to have a tendency to twist around and touch screen first against your clothes.

I've seen pics that Steffen and others have put up, and thought that there could be another way to do this. Enjoy !
